Tech solutions are plugging in to help ease widening congestion at global ports

As shipping’s port congestion crisis widens, tech-players are hoping to capitalise on calls for improved visibility across container supply chains.
SeaIntelligence’s Lars Jensen noted the lack of any real-time overview of global bottlenecks, as pockets of congestion spring up from Auckland to Singapore to Los Angeles.
“Instead, it is drip-wise in terms of each individual port,” he explained. “Sometimes you can only get the info from a carrier calling at the port/terminal, …

Project44 launches free port visibility service

After announcing its acquisition of Ocean Insights earlier this month, project44 on Tuesday released its port visibility service, Port Intel.

This online service, free for a limited time, will provide subscribers with reporting that summarizes port congestion and location of anchored vessels to enable critical inventory and management decisions. The tool is powered by Ocean Insights, giving project44 access to the tracking data of 55 shipping lines, 700 seaports and more than 5,000 vessels,...

Why scale matters in the visibility space

Thursday morning, project44 announced a large acquisition in the visibility space, Ocean Insights. Ocean Insights is a German company that focuses on visibility in the global container space. This is the latest deal for project44 and one that greatly enhances its scale.

This deal struck me as a pivotal moment in the visibility space. Project44 has clearly developed scale that cements the firm as the dominant player in the emerging space.

Project44 reels in Ocean Insights in ‘largest acquisition in visibility space’

With port congestion, particularly in California’s San Pedro Bay, making headlines, project44 made a huge splash Thursday in announcing it had acquired Ocean Insights to provide global supply chain visibility to its customers.

“BCOs [beneficial cargo owners] are getting squeezed at the ports and are screaming for relief. There is just way more freight coming into ports than the ports can handle, creating a record number of vessels waiting to get unloaded,” project44 founder and CEO Jett...

China celebrates a new year, but sees return of old supply chain congestion

The Year of the Ox may have begun today, but more trouble lies ahead for container supply chains post-Chinese New Year.
In fact, a carbon-copy of the port congestion and landside disruption seen in China twelve months ago could be on the cards.
Most Chinese were at home celebrating the holiday when the Covid-19 virus first surfaced in Wuhan in January 2020, triggering the first lockdowns across the country.
As a result, when …

Major ports and carriers report large increases in container rollovers

More than one in three containers shipped globally in December were rolled-over at transhipment hubs, according to new research from data tracking firm Ocean Insights.
Its monthly analysis of container rollovers at the top 20 global ports revealed that the global average had increased to 37% last month, with some hubs seeing far higher numbers.
“Of the 20 global ports for which Ocean Insights collates data, 75% saw an increase in rollover …

As shipping’s ‘seasonal lull’ remains anything but, rollovers continue to climb

Container rollovers at the world’s leading transhipment ports began to climb again last month, according to new research from tracking data provider Ocean Insights.
After a global decline in rollovers during September, there were increasing numbers of shipments missing their scheduled loadings with almost every carrier.
“This is supposed to be container shipping’s seasonal lull after the summer peak season,” said Josh Brazil, chief operations officer at Ocean Insights.
“But on some tradelanes, …

Rollover cargo still on the increase says Ocean Insights

Increasing levels of rollover cargo at congested ports are continuing to prevent the smooth operation of global supply chains an Ocean Insights study has found.

Asian ports exporting to Europe and the US have seen a month-on-month rise in cargo delayed at ports during October, according to data analysis of  more than one million data points, according to the data consolidation and analysis group for forwarders and shippers, Ocean Insights, which is based in Rostock Germany.

“Overall container...
