Another great week for load volumes, now up 7% year-over-year

National outbound tender volumes continued to climb this week by 5% week-over-week and 7% year-over-year. Overall volumes are surging even as import volumes are plummeting. There is typically a week lag before imports get tendered and included in our OTVI. The surge in imports at the end of April is playing a part in the volume surge. California is home to two of the largest ports in the country but is also the largest agricultural-producing state.

Both total volumes and reefer volumes out of...

Chart of the Week: Outbound Tender Volume Index– USA SONAR: OTVI.USA

After experiencing one of the most volatile periods in history over the past two months, freight market volumes have recovered to February levels in the past week. February is not a great month for freight traditionally speaking but considering a month ago volumes were running 15-20% below average for this time of year, February looks fine.

One of the most debated topics in the transportation industry and the overall economy is...

Best week for load volumes since March, now up 5% year-over-year

Tender volumes are racing to the upside and are tracking positive year-over-year in May, albeit off of a depressed 2019 comparison. Volumes have risen more than 15% since the trough on April 16. Tender rejections are reacting slowly to the rising volumes, but rising nonetheless. Volumes show signs of life, now 8% below year ago levels

There is life in the outbound tender volume index (OTVI) once again. After two weeks of walking along the x-axis, OTVI has turned to the upside. Volumes have risen just over 4% since last week and have broken the 9,000 mark.

Federal social distancing guidelines expired on Thursday, April 30, and the White House has indicated the restrictions will not be extended. Despite warnings from health and disease experts, half of U.S. states are moving forward with relaxing some restrictions....
