San Pedro Bay ports ahead of emissions reduction targets

San Pedro Bay ports emissions reduction

The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) reports that emissions from the combined San Pedro Bay ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles continue to decline as a result of marine terminal, ocean carrier and industry partner investments in cleaner equipment and technologies, including operational changes, to improve air quality in Southern California, according to two new reports released by the ports. Ocean carriers warn FMC against regulating prices

WASHINGTON — Revisions made to a proposed rule aimed at curbing the ability of container ship carriers to refuse to provide vessel space to their customers has delved into the dangerous area of price regulation, according to the carriers.

In a rulemaking proposed last year, the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission attempted to define what is an “unreasonable refusal to deal or negotiate” the vessel space that carriers provide for their customers’ containers.

After both carriers and shippers took issue

California cracking down on illegal vessel fuel starting in May

Vessel owners and operators calling at California ports should prepare for more vigorous fuel testing by regulators, aimed at ensuring cargo ships remain compliant with state air pollution laws.

Starting May 1, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will begin “further analysis” of fuel samples taken during routine inspections of oceangoing vessels, the agency announced on Monday.

The fuel sulfur limit under California’s Ocean-Going Vessels (OGV) Fuels Regulation is 0.1%. However, “there is a...

LA and Long Beach ports could learn from Mister Rogers

Mister Rogers sang songs and staged puppet shows to teach us how to be good neighbors.

Well, Mister Rogers is dead and the world has gone to hell in a handbasket. Perhaps we have set aside being neighborly during the COVID-caused economic firestorm that is proving fatal for businesses large and small.

For our story, we turn to California’s San Pedro Bay neighbors, a “disappointing” press release and the lack of agreement on implementation of a $10-per-twenty-foot-equivalent-unit (TEU) clean...

Oakland Athletics takes swing at Schnitzer Steel

The Oakland Athletics this week struck back against opponents of a proposed ballpark with a lawsuit of its own.

Oakland A’s President Dave Kaval said in a series of 16 tweets that the ballclub filed suit against California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) in Alameda County Superior Court on Wednesday for its “failure to impose [and] enforce environmental law in West Oakland against Schnitzer Steel, the largest metal-shredding facility in the state.”

ILWU: Don’t blame labor for ports’ market share drop

California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently has received two written pleas to take action to prevent the state’s port industry from losing more market share. While the writers agree something must be done to stop the flow of business to ports on the East and Gulf coasts, they do not entirely agree on the causes of the loss.

Fifty-two organizations led by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) sent a letter to Newsom on Monday that said, in part, that importers began taking their business...

California governor urged to reverse ports’ receding market share

California Gov. Gavin Newsom got a letter Monday asking that the state take action to reverse the loss of market share at West Coast container ports.

The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA), the first signatory, was joined by such organizations as the California Trucking Association, Harbor Trucking Association, California Railroad Association, Future Ports, Pacific Maritime Association, National Retail Federation, Agriculture Transportation Coalition, and Pacific Coast Customs Brokers...

Toilet paper rolls and supply chain roles

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the American consumer likely reached for a package of toilet paper on the supermarket shelf without a thought about how that product got there.

“People now understand how critical it is for us to get our goods. When we’re standing in line waiting to get toilet paper and paper towels, they now start to understand a little bit about the role the ports and everybody in the supply chain play in getting goods and actually where those goods are manufactured,” said...
