Mumbai Maersk sets new draft record at Port of Felixstowe

The 20,568 TEU container ship Mumbai Maersk has set a new record for the deepest draft vessel to call at Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe.

The vessel, deployed on Maersk Line’s AE10 service between Europe and Asia, arrived on 11 November from Bremerhaven, Germany to the UK port with a draft of 16.8 metres and sailed 24 hours later with a draft of 17 metres.

The record was set just four weeks after the UK’s largest container port announced the completion of a GB£130 million (US$160 million)...

Hutchison Ports completes Port of Felxistowe deepening

Hutchison Ports announced that the main approach channel and Berths 8&9 at Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe have been deepened.

The announcement was formally made today (4 October) during the maiden call at the UK port of its namesake OOCL Felixstowe, the latest in a series of 24,188 TEU mega container vessels operated by COSCO-owned ocean carrier Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL).

Port of Felixstowe introduces autonomous terminal tractors into container terminal operations

Hutchison Ports-operated Port of Felixstowe is one of the first ports in Europe to introduce autonomous terminal tractor units (ATs) into mixed-traffic container terminal operations.

The first two battery-powered units to enter service at the UK’s largest container port have been supplied by manufacturer Westwell.

Ports under pressure as strikes over pay continue worldwide

Global maritime research consultancy Drewry reports that labour disputes and port workers’ strikes worldwide will continue to cause severe disruptions in container ports, several of which face heavy congestion challenges.

Workers begin new round of strikes at Port of Felixstowe

Workers at the UK’s largest container port at Felixstowe have launched a new strike action today (27 September) due to an ongoing dispute over pay.

Over 1,900 members of the British trade union, Unite, began strike action at 07:00 (local time) on 27 September. The strike is expected to end on 5 October at 06:59 (local time).

Strike at Felixstowe port set to disrupt dozens of vessels; 33 boxships now affected
