Shanghai lockdown is not causing global supply chain chaos (yet)

Shanghai lockdown

First came China’s Wuhan lockdown in February 2020. Then came the closing of Yantian in Shenzhen, the world’s fourth-largest port, in June 2021. Now, Shanghai — site of the world’s largest port — is in extended lockdown. The first two events had extreme effects on container shipping to the U.S. But Shanghai is no Wuhan or Yantian, at least not yet.

One fear is that China’s strict COVID policy will lead to a pileup of containers at Shanghai’s port. The big difference...

China’s lockdown will impact more than electronics from Yantian, Shanghai

The ports of Shanghai and Yantian are known as two of the largest electronics export hubs in the world, but if you look in the containers, you will find much more than that.

Using ImportGenius, American Shipper analyzed the bills of lading of Chinese exports leaving those ports bound for the United States since Feb. 1 to see what variety of items are manufactured and exported from those specific regions.

In addition to televisions and other electronic goods, the 5,958 containers processed...

Seko warns clients lockdown in Shenzhen will impact port activity

With China locking down the port city of Shenzhen on Sunday in hopes of reducing a COVID-19 spread, Seko Logistics warned clients that the measure will impact the delivery of products from that region.

American Shipper reviewed the company’s COVID-19 advisory note, in which Seko explained that because of the weeklong lockdown in Shenzhen, “no cargo will be able to load in Yantian … and vessels most likely will omit the port.”

China’s “zero-COVID” strategy was previously used in Yantian in 2021,...

Yantian limits intake of export containers amid new year holiday rush

Hutchison Ports says Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) in southern China lowered the cut-off time for receiving outbound containers since Wednesday, claiming delayed ship arrivals have caused containers to pile up in its yard.
YICT is one of three sub-ports that make up Shenzhen port, the others being Nanshan and Dachan Bay.
Shenzhen is China’s third-busiest container port, after Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan, and the fourth-busiest in the world. In 2020, Shenzhen handled …

A most ghoulish story: Halloween supply chain nightmares

Before Santa arrives with a sleigh full of toys and gifts manufactured in Asia, kids of all ages will be dressing up for Halloween and adults will be decorating their homes. Halloween is among the most popular holidays in America, so the horrific congestion this year is no treat for the nation’s supply chain. One retailer that relies solely on this holiday for its revenues is Spencer’s pop-up stores, Spirit Halloween.

Taking a historic look at the Spirit Halloween shipping volumes, the delays...

Warning: Book now or ‘Christmas may be canceled’

Containers don’t lie — and currently they tell the unvarnished ugly story of the supply chain bottleneck facing importers. U.S. shippers this holiday season will need more than Rudolph’s red nose to guide them through the whiteout of congestion.

“Obviously, there are options for shippers [transload/ocean charter and airfreight] but the real message is book now or Christmas may be canceled,” said Brian Bourke, chief growth officer of SEKO Logistics.

To illustrate the impact of congestion issues,...

Los Angeles port braces for Yantian catch-up, peak season combo

Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles announced its best June numbers ever on Wednesday, capping off its best quarter ever. Volumes are even higher in July and the number of container ships at anchor in San Pedro Bay — the so-called “parking lot” — is on the rise yet again.

“Cargo continues to move at a record pace. There’s no lull in the action, no half-time intermissions,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka.

Port of Yantian productivity rapidly improves but export delays persist

Three big container vessels in a row at a port terminal, with cranes overhead.

The logjam of containers and ships at the Port of Yantian in China has noticeably improved in the 13 days since COVID-related safety restrictions were lifted and terminals resumed full-scale operations, but cascading delays could impact the peak holiday shipping season because dockworkers have so much cargo to dig out from, according to the world’s largest shipping line and freight data providers.

Shipping giant A.P. Møller – Maersk said in a customer notice Friday that yard density is down to...

Container shipping’s stranger-than-fiction first half of 2021

If the story of shipping’s first half were published as fiction, a critic might say: “Wildly inventive but highly implausible. Way too over-the-top. Too cluttered. Remember, less is more!”

And yet it’s all true.

Here’s a look back at the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction first six months on 2021, as recounted in American Shipper:

January

Unlike in Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” and other entries in the...

Medical device industry wants priority at crowded ports

This is an excerpt from Medically Necessary, a health care supply chain newsletterSubscribe here.

The request: Last week, AdvaMed, the lobbying organization for the medical device industry, sent a letter to the White House asking the Biden administration to prioritize shipments of medical devices at crowded ports.

The letter doesn’t include many details about how such an arrangement would work, and AdvaMed didn’t respond to questions about the request.

While the letter is addressed to the White...
