Port of Long Beach: On-water visibility requires supply chain information highway

The Port of Long Beach announced Thursday that it has selected technology consultant Uncomn to help it do something historically uncommon in the ports sector: provide digital end-to-end visibility across transportation modes.

Executive Director Mario Cordero said during a press conference that the port has made it a priority “to help stakeholders by getting them information they need and when they need it. … It was clear that the best possible solution was to offer access to a platform that...

Anchored container ships weigh down Port of LA’s volume

November container volume at the Port of Los Angeles was up 22% year-over-year to more than 889,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

That number could have been closer to 990,000, according to Executive Director Gene Seroka.

“It’s worth noting that there were 12 ships at anchor on November 30 awaiting berthing rights here in Los Angeles with an estimated 100,000 TEUs on board. Those vessels were delayed by about two days and thus shifted into our December data,” Seroka reported during a...

Pandemic hit Port of LA with huge ebbs and flows

Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka looked back on “a year of big swings” during a live interview with FreightWaves’ Dooner and Michael Vincent on Tuesday.

Those swings have taken the port from a springtime trough of a 19% year-over-year volume drop to today, when the amount of imports “is just unprecedented,” Seroka said during the Q&A conducted during FreightWaves’ North American Supply Chain Summit.

Seroka has long been an advocate for information sharing among stakeholders. The...

Port of LA’s Seroka calls for US focus on exports

Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka called for a national export program to narrow the trade gap between the United States and China during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” this week.

“We are now at five imports to every export and that’s the widest trade gap we’ve witnessed at the Port of Los Angeles in some time,” Seroka told hosts Rosanna Lockwood and Sri Jegarajah on Thursday.

He said that import-export imbalance puts pressure on the port’s service providers and does...
