US DoT awards Jaxport $20 million for port upgrades

The Jaxport has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation with a $20 million grant, to rebuild more than 100 acres of the existing terminal pavement at the SSA Jacksonville Container Terminal. The funding came through the $238 million plan between Jaxport and their close partner SSA Marine.

Port of Umm Qasr shuts down again as protests continue

The port of Umm Qasr in Iraq has shut down once again, after its short reopening following days of closure. Protesters continued to block all the main roads leading to the port, a key part of the logistics chain for Iraq’s food supply, which has now been effectively closed for more than a week.

Port Alaska receives $25m grant for repairs

The US Department of Transportation issued a $25 million grant to the Port of Alaska (Anchorage’s seaport), in line with the Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) program, with the funds being used for the first phase of the port’s upgrade, renovating its cement and petroleum dock, which is falling into disrepair.

Port of Durban Welcomes First Vessel on New MIAX Service

This week Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and Transnet Ports Terminals (TPT), through the Port of Durban, welcomed the first vessel to arrive at the port on the new MIAX (Middle East-India-Africa Express) service recently introduced by Hapag-Lloyd and its alliance partner, Ocean Network Express (ONE).

The container vessel, MV NEW JERSEY TRADER, was welcomed into port on 5 November with a ceremonial tug spray and plaque exchange. The vessel was built in 2011 and flies the flag of Malta.

Australian box terminal operators offset falling volumes by hiking fees

Australia’s terminal operators have offset dwindling container volumes and quayside revenue by hiking controversial ‘port infrastructure’ charges.
According to the Container stevedoring monitoring report 2018-19, published today by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), throughput at the country’s terminals increased just 0.2% to 7.88m teu – the second lowest rate in a decade.
Furthermore, full container lifts fell 4.9%, compared with a 14.6% uptick in empty container lifts.

Port of Lamu to become a cargo transshipping hub

Kenya’s Lamu port, which is being constructed by China, is expected to be launched in December and will be mainly be a transshipping hub for cargo destined for ports such as Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Maputo.
