Can China Be Self-sustainable in the 2020 LSFO Market?

  • China could become self-sustainable in the LSFO market during 2020, producing 18.1 million metric tonnes (mt) of low sulphur bunker fuel this year.
  • China will be able to produce 22.6 million mt of the IMO-compliant fuel by 2021, increasing output to 29.6 million mt by 2022.
  • IMO 2020 and the COVID-19 economic impact forced many state-run refineries to produce LSFO to serve domestic and international demand.
  • China’s marine fuel futures contract to attract strong interest.

Japan To Maintain HSFO and 0.5% Sulphur Fuel Supply

  • IMO-compliant bunker fuel are available at Japan’s 14 refineries.
  • Around 100,000 b/d low sulfur bunker fuel demand expected
  • HSFO supplies to be maintained to serve owners/operators installing scrubbers on their ships, as Japan will support the use of open-loop scrubbers aboard ships.

Japanese refineries are ready to supply 0.5% sulfur bunker fuels, well ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s global sulfur mandate for marine fuels, reports Platts.

Galp’s IMO Refining Margins To Expand

  • Galp expects its refining margins to improve in the second half of this year with increased demand for marine fuels supporting crack spreads for middle distillates.
  • Firm cut estimate for average refining margins in 2019 to $4/bl from $5-6/bl previously after a difficult Q2.
  • Galp cut crude runs at its 330,000 b/d of refining capacity to minimise the impact of historically weak crack spreads for gasoline over the period.
  • Processed 252,000 b/d of crude in Q2, down by 13pc year on year, and...

IMO 2020 Shaking Up How Shipping and the Oil Sector Works?

  • IMO is meeting for its only MEPC session this year ahead of 2020 sulphur regulations which will be affecting shippers and refiners.
  • The oncoming regulations will reduce air pollution and prevent 570,000 deaths within 5 years of implementation.
  • While ports like Singapore, Fujairah and Rotterdam are all equipped with compliant fuels, the same can’t be said about smaller ports.
  • BP and Royal Dutch Shell have already reported low oil production which has further strengthened the case of fuel...
