Emirates puts giant A380 passenger jet to work hauling cargo

Emirates said Wednesday it has deployed the Airbus A380, a massive double-deck passenger aircraft, for the first time in a dedicated cargo operation and plans to add more cargo-only flights in November.

The first A380 passenger freighter recently transported medical supplies from Seoul, South Korea, to Amsterdam via its home base in Dubai.

Korean Air jettisons passenger seats to up cargo capacity

Projections that the capacity shortage in air cargo could last into next year and beyond are prompting some passenger airlines to spend money removing seats to make room for more boxes of goods.

Recent reconfigurations are taking place in Asia, with Korean Air the latest to take the plunge.

FAA clears airlines to remove passenger seats for cargo

The Federal Aviation Administration late Friday gave U.S. airlines permission to remove passenger seats and transport cargo on the floor of the cabin in aircraft being deployed on cargo-only flights.

The exemption to existing regulations governing aircraft operations lasts for one year. The FAA also extended until July 10, 2021, its prior ruling that airlines could fly with cargo strapped into the seats through the end of this year.
