When boarding a commercial flight, what do you expect? Cramped seats. Maybe an incessant talker. Or everyone’s favorite — an on-time departure, only to sit on the tarmac for an hour.

But what about safety? Do you expect airlines to keep you safe? Absolutely. U.S. airlines have achieved a remarkable safety record. Since 2010, only two people have died in...

VHF Radio Transmissions’ Impact On AIS Reception

USCG published a safety alert in which highlights that a very high frequency (VHF) maritime radio transmission on one’s own vessel, or even transmissions by a nearby vessel a football field’s length away (about 136 meters or 445 feet), may block AIS reception for the duration the radio is keyed.

An analysis of the relevant standards has shown that this may impact all classes of AIS equipment regardless of how the antennas for the two systems are installed.

Revised guidelines

As stated in IMO...

Carriers can reduce legal, financial risk with more frequent MVR monitoring

Many carriers pull their drivers’ motor vehicle records (MVRs) to check for violations and privilege suspensions just once a year. This means that, in some cases, a driver could lose driving privileges for up to 364 days before a carrier ever finds out.

This “same time next year” approach to MVRs doesn’t work in the carrier’s favor. While FMCSA has issued minimal requirements surrounding MVR checks, carriers doing only the bare minimum are creating and perpetuating visibility gaps that leave...
