Market Insight: Has MIQ Logistics put the For Sale sign up?

Rumoured takeover target MIQ Logistics has attracted a lot of interest from the executives in my network in recent weeks.
Many have pointed out the US-based 3PL is a palatable bolt-on for asset-light logistics providers – not only for rumoured buyer Noatum Maritime, but also for larger would-be suitors.
The deal
The target – a YRC Worldwide spin-off from August 2010 – is private, so only few headline financial details are available, but it could well be …

IMO 2020 fuel rule will be a ‘game-changer’ for ‘top-heavy’ container charter market

With 1.15m teu of newbuild capacity, including 46 ULCVs, expected to be delivered, 2019 is set to be another “interesting year” in container shipping, according to Alphaliner.
Due to the “top-heavy” orderbook, the consultant is predicting a tighter outlook for tonnage in the 10,000 teu and under sector and a more modest global fleet expansion of around 3.5% than the 5.7% growth of last year.
At the end of the year, the world’s …

Furore over Brexit ferry contract at Ramsgate is ‘overblown nonsense’

“Brexit tribalism” is at the heart of the furore surrounding the UK government’s decision to award Seaborne Freight a contract for ro-ro services in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
A media storm  broke last week with news that the start-up had been awarded a £13.8m contract to provide ferry services into the port of Ramsgate.
One source close to the industry told The Loadstar: “It is overblown nonsense, in so far …

Market Insight: executive roulette – time to pay the bill for all the window dressing

So, should we expect more joy or pain next year for executives of the major supply chain actors worldwide?
I say the latter, particularly for the worst-performer of 2018, Switzerland’s Kuehne + Nagel.
Topping the pre-Xmas podium – its stock is down a whopping 27% this year and was lately on my radar over reports of redundancies in Shindellegi, but rather than senior staff, it could be chief executive Detlef Trefzger on …

Maersk switches shortsea service to Europe from Immingham to Hull

Maersk is relocating its Immingham-Europe service to Hull Container Terminal, following shipper concerns over accessibility.
The 800-teu weekly sailing, operated by BG Freight, will move on 12 January, arriving at and departing from Hull on Saturdays, reaching Rotterdam midweek.
A spokesperson for Maersk told The Loadstar: “Customers had been contacting us about using Hull instead of Immingham as apparently it is easier to gain access.
“In some cases, they were saying, issues with connectivity …

A festive rate respite, but carriers may be in for ‘a bumpy ride’ in 2019

The penultimate reading from the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) for 2018 saw continued erosion of spot rates on the transpacific, countered by gains on the Asia-Europe trades.
With US retailers now reported to be overstocked after the advance booking rush to beat the postponed 1 January tariff hike on Chinese imports, demand is proving weaker than the seasonal norm, forcing carriers into heavy discounting.
For the US west coast, spot rates …
