Qantas Freight makes progress on cargo pileup

Qantas Freight said Monday it made substantial progress over the weekend clearing a huge backlog of freight from its Australian airport facilities, a problem created when a transition to a new IT system didn’t go smoothly. However, it estimated that normal operations won’t be fully restored at all locations until Oct. 21.

The cargo division of Qantas Airways said in a customer notice that it was able in recent days to deliver a large number of single, shipper-loaded containers that don’t require...

Blizzard cripples US air cargo operations

Planes on the tarmac in snowy weather.

A major winter storm moving through the eastern half of the U.S. is snarling express delivery and air cargo operations, with carriers grounding aircraft and shutting terminals in many airports due to hazardous conditions.

FedEx Express (NYSE: FDX) said in a service bulletin that it experienced substantial disruptions overnight at its Memphis, Tennessee, and Indianapolis hubs due to freezing rain and snow, respectively.

“Potential delays are possible for package deliveries across the U.S. with a...

Air, ocean shipments delayed as Tianjin responds to COVID cases

Containers and cranes at a Chinese port.

Import and export operations in Tianjin are slowing after a small cluster of COVID cases was discovered over the weekend, according to third-party logistics provider C.H. Robinson. Meanwhile, in Shenzhen, authorities are blaming a contaminated import shipment infecting a cargo worker, who then spread the virus to three other people.

The news comes as China reinforces its zero-tolerance policy toward COVID in the weeks leading up to the Beijing Olympics that begin Feb. 4.

Black Friday is going to be boring this year

Black Friday will be boring this year as supply chain disruptions spread out deals and discounts

Black Friday used to be a welcome mat for the holidays. It was almost a holiday in itself, with families waking up early in the morning rife with excitement to join the gaggles of other holiday shoppers as they explored endless aisles of holiday gifts and goodies.

But not anymore.

Black Friday is no longer an event –– it’s a concept that’s becoming more and more amorphous every year.

“Black Friday isn’t actually a day,” Deb Gabor, CEO of Sol Marketing, told Modern Shipper. “Black Friday is, at...

Breaking: Port of LA board endorses carrier fines for container backlogs

Tractors and containers moving about a marine terminal at a port.

The Port of Los Angeles Harbor Commission on Friday unanimously approved a plan to penalize ocean carriers with a $100 surcharge, compounding daily, for containers that sit too long on marine terminals in an effort to clear backlogs that are preventing vessels from unloading cargo.

Executive Director Gene Seroka said the California Association of Port Authorities on Thursday voted to support the joint effort by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, providing legal cover to add the fee to the...

Ocean delays turn desperate retailers to the skies, increasing emissions

Shipping delays are causing ocean to air shifts, raising emissions.

Congestion at ports in the United States as well as Asia is causing major shipping delays and leaving retailers “desperate to get their goods to physical and virtual store shelves for the holiday season,” according to Eric Kulisch, FreightWaves’ air cargo editor.

Shippers are shifting cargo from oceans to air transportation to avoid delays. But this expensive ocean-to-air shift has ripple effects, including environmental ones. Moving freight via ocean vessel is much more efficient in terms of...

Supply chain woes drag down Nike sales

Stacks of red Nike shoe boxes in a warehouse.

Snarled supply chains and lost production from factory closures due to COVID are dampening Nike Inc.’s revenue growth through a combination of lost sales and higher transportation costs.

Nike (NYSE: NKE) reported $12.25 billion in revenues for the quarter ended Aug. 31, a 16% gain from last year that came in lower than analysts expected, and downgraded full-year guidance to mid-single-digit growth due solely to export and shipping difficulties that reduced product availability amid strong...
