‘The sky’s the limit’ for charter rates – that’s if you can find a ship

Containership owners are instructing their brokers not to entertain fixture offers of less than 12 months, and some are insisting on minimum two-year charters.
The charter market boxship boom that began in the larger sizes has filtered through to the smallest sectors, with Alphaliner reporting on several 24-month employments for vessels under 1,000 teu.
The consultant noted the new fixture of the 803 teu Jork Ruler by Peel Ports-owned feeder operator BG …

The lull before the ‘post-Suez storm’ of vessel arrivals at North Europe ports

The main container ports in North Europe were eerily quiet at the weekend, due to the almost week-long blockage of the Suez Canal by the Ever Given.
But now, an armada of late-running ULCVs is enroute from the Mediterranean, providing an intense challenge for vessel operators to turn ships around as quickly as possible and return them, as well as desperately needed empty equipment, back to Asia.
For example, the 19,273 teu Cosco …

Forwarders should move quickly on Ever Given GA, but legal wrangle looms

The British International Freight Association (BIFA) has urged forwarders with cargo on board the Ever Given to begin General Average (GA) procedures with their shippers.
The vessel’s owner declared GA last Thursday.
Robert Keen, director general of BIFA, said: “When our members receive notification that a General Average has been declared for a vessel, whatever the position, their first action must be to give the importer immediate notice.
“The appointed average adjusters will …

Anger as Maersk suspends contract bookings, sparking scramble for capacity

Maersk’s decision to “temporarily suspend” spot and short-term contract bookings from Asia following the Suez Canal blockage has left forwarders and NVOCCs scrambling for alternatives.
The carrier said on Tuesday it estimated a loss of capacity across its network of up to 30% “over multiple weeks”, in addition to equipment shortages in Asia.
One UK forwarder The Loadstar spoke to today said although he appreciated the difficulties for Maersk, he was “shocked” …

Lengthy wait for cargo as Ever Given owner declares General Average

As the investigation into the grounding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal begins, the vessel’s Japanese owner, Shoe Kisen, this morning declared General Average.
And a customer circular from Evergreen, seen by The Loadstar, confirms that Shoe Kisen this morning appointed Richard Hogg Lindley as adjustor.
For the vessel, now at anchor at the Bitter Lakes area undergoing technical inspections, a possible date of departure to ports of discharge has …

Specialist salvors on their way as more vessels queue behind Ever Given

Salvage teams from the Netherlands and Japan are on their way to the stricken 20,388 teu Ever Given, which is still stuck fast in the Suez Canal, blocking the vital shipping artery.
Evergreen said today Japanese shipowner Shoei Kisen Kaisha had appointed Dutch specialist Smit Salvage and compatriot Nippon Salvage to re-float the vessel after two days of unsuccessful attempts involving all available tugs and equipment at the disposal of the …

Against the odds: Ever Given – a Black Swan event?

The Ever Given ripple effect could be unprecedented, unless the 20,388 teu containership is freed in days rather than weeks after grounding against the bank of the Suez Canal.
“Ever Innovative, Ever Efficient, Ever Reliable” may be a slogan that, for the time being, please, Taiwan’s Evergreen – which operates the mighty vessel, owned by Japan’s Shoei Kisan Kaisha – can park too elsewhere (please do not click to expand below, …

Questions being asked after box ship runs aground blocking Suez Canal

The 20,388 teu containership Ever Given has been freed after grounding against the seawall of the Suez Canal, and traffic on the waterway is expected to resume once the vessel is towed to an anchorage for inspection.
An update at noon local time from GAC port news said that, according to information from the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), “the grounded vessel has been partially re-floated and is now alongside the canal bank”.
Prompt …

Lines using cheaper Cape of Good Hope route will cost Suez Canal $10m

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) is set to lose over $10m in revenue from container lines routing vessels via the Cape of Good Hope rather than its waterway.
According to new Alphaliner research, “the number of containerships that have opted to use the Cape route and bypass the Suez Canal has risen to a historic peace-time high,” including at least 20 sailings on the Asia-Europe, Europe-Asia and North America east coast-Asia …
