Supply chain radar: Flexport – behind the scenes

Flexport chief executive Ryan Petersen is undoubtedly a data guy. It’s a consistent theme in his blog posts, keynote speeches and his many media interviews – we also know this is the case from his previous startup, Import Genius (IG).
IG apparently exploits what I consider to be a quirky loophole in US Customs and Trade data regulations, and which some might find concerning. Manifest and Bill of Lading (B/L) data, …

Supply chain radar: Flexport aiming for a long-term Amazon-esque valuation

I nearly fell off my chair when Flexport chief executive Ryan Petersen yesterday told me the $1bn funding round he had just secured is only the first milestone to a market valuation where the long-term limit is the sky.
When asked to comment on market reports, which vaguely suggested that the start-up’s implicit value is currently a tad over $3bn, I asked him “why on earth only $3bn – why not $6bn …

Supply chain radar: Maersk results out – don’t panic yet, a new blue star is born

A quick and dirty take on AP Møller Mærsk (APMM)’s fourth-quarter and annual results, released this morning, which confirmed the Danish group is getting leaner but is still in full restructuring mode – notably, its financials are almost unrecognisable compared to only three/six months ago.
Reaction
Investors were unimpressed by the numbers, with analysts – consensus estimates imply very little upside, while my fair value estimates imply more pain than joy going forward …

Supply chain radar: DSV – Panalpina – Agility: the vortex increases its pull

Investors following the DSV–Panalpina–Agility story are puzzled as to what could happens next, according to a New York-based portfolio manager I spoke to yesterday, echoing similar views of traders in London.
One swallow
“Agility (AGY) could swallow Panalpina (PAN) overnight, or just take it over and leave the foundation with a minority stake. Either way it would be a good deal for both,” I was told.
I don’t think so.
While many investors still …

Supply chain radar: Panalpina’s master plan has a secret twist and mystery suitor

The master plan drafted by Panalpina (PAN) is so ambitious that it implies the possible involvement of a third player, market sources say, despite the fact that the Swiss 3PL has yet to finalise a deal of any kind with Kuwait-based Agility (AGY).
For the record, a PAN-AGY tie-up has been in the making well before DSV sneaked in with its initial Sfr170 a share proposal for PAN on 16 January.

Supply chain radar exclusive: Revealed – the CEVA Logistics reorganisation led by CMA CGM

“A few weeks ago, CEVA announced a new strategic direction, which is based on the intensive collaboration with, and the support of, CMA CGM. This new strategy opens up a new chapter for CEVA and has ambitious objectives. To be able to realise these objectives we need to change the way we work and adapt our organisation accordingly.” – CEVA chief executive officer Xavier Urbain, 20 December 2018.

Supply chain radar: Panalpina goes for a merger of unequals – what if DSV walks away now?

Surprise surprise: Panalpina (PAN) today announced the board of directors confirmed “media reports that it is in discussions with Agility Group (AGY) on potential strategic opportunities with regard to their respective logistics businesses. The discussions between the two companies are at a preliminary stage.”

Supply chain radar: What’s the point of Maersk’s US customs buy?

When details of the Stay Ahead plan of AP Møller Mærsk (APMM) were exclusively reported by The Loadstar in October, it immediately appeared clear that the Danish group would need to embrace deal-making to reinforce its new identity. Spurred by new ideas of doing business, its executive management was, we were told, looking to add heft to its network in the US, trying to connect the dots of the vast supply chain management activities they run.

Supply chain radar: Panalpina board set to reject DSV’s proposal – Plan B? To turn acquisitive

Market sources close the Sfr4bn takeover of Panalpina (PAN) by DSV have said that the board of directors of the Swiss 3PL are set to formally reject the Danish company’s initial proposal, which was offered at Sfr170 a share.
“DSV has already offered significantly more than Sfr170 a share, looking to pay Sfr200-plus a share, but it’s not about the money.
“There is emotional attachment to the PAN story, and for DSV, well …

Supply chain radar: Squared circles – what if CMA CGM goes for Panalpina, and DSV is left out?

From CMA CGM vs DSV to CEVA Logistics vs Panalpina – and beyond, is a very small step for me, because if CMA CGM is just half as good as I think it is, despite all the consolidation talk led by the freight forwarders, the French carrier will likely be the one that surprises us all again in 2019, one way or another.
