Maersk adds fees to Panama Canal’s freshwater charge

Following Panama Canal’s tariff increase, Maersk announced they will implement a Panama Canal Surcharge (PCC) for all cargo transiting through the Canal, which will come into force by April 1st, 2020.

Container Shipping Major Adds Congestion Surcharge in China!

  • Ocean Network Express announced reefer containers to be discharged at an alternative port without prior notice.
  • Due to shortage of reefer plugs availability, ONE may adjust the transportation plan for reefer shipments to Xingang (Tianjin) and Shanghai.

Reefer cargo rerouted from Chinese ports due to plug shortage

Following the coronavirus spread, refrigerated containers are being diverted and relocated due to the shortage of reefer plugs at several Chinese ports. Meaning that container companies cannot secure the discharge of their reefers containers without the main power source.

Specifically, several days ago the MSC company informed that couldn’t discharge its shipment and had no option but to apply “clause 19 of our Bill of Lading and Sea Waybill Terms and Conditions”.

Panama Canal implements freshwater charge

Despite the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) efforts to pursue Panama Canal to reconsider the Freshwater Charge implementation several days ago, the water tax for ships passing through the passage, has been set into force from 15 February.

After a month of Panama Canal’s announcement for freshwater surcharge, ships will from now pay the new fee which aims to give a boost to the passage’s water levels.

ONE applies reefer congestion surcharges

In light of the coronavirus situation, Ocean Network Express recently decided to apply a congestion surcharge of $1.000 per container for all the reefer cargoes arriving into Shanghai and Xingang from 15 February and onwards, as for regulated trades the effective date will be 14th March 2020 until further notice.

Following the slow inbound container pick-up activity that coronavirus has resulted, Xingang and Shanghai are already facing a serious shortage of available reefer plugs, ONE reported.
