Truck safety advocates are calling on the Biden administration to act faster to prevent deaths resulting from large truck crashes, following new data compiled from federal sources.

The one-page report, released by the Truck Safety Coalition, ranks the 12 states with the highest fatality rates and overall deaths, based on statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Truck crash deaths jump 13% to ‘crisis’ level

Deaths in crashes involving trucks hit a “crisis” level and reversed a downward trend in place before the pandemic, according to federal regulators.

Overall injuries in large-truck crashes increase 5.3%

The estimated number of people injured in crashes involving large trucks — including truck occupants and nonoccupants — increased 5.3 percent to 159,000 in 2019, according to federal data released Friday.

Isolating the data for truck occupants alone, injuries jumped by 7,000 people, or 18%, to an estimated 46,000 people in 2019 over 2018, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported, including injuries for both single- and multiple-vehicle crashes.

OOIDA’s Spencer asks Biden for top post at FMCSA
