Emerging technology drives improvement in fleet safety on the road

Trucking safety technology is evolving. Risk Control Transportation Specialist Anthony Slamar at Northland Insurance, recently appeared on an episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!? to highlight the growing role of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and how they can help to improve fleet safety.

Slamar notes the technology is a package of safety features designed to help drivers monitor their surroundings. ADAS operates on various sensors, including vehicle alerts designed to take corrective action...

Set New Year’s resolutions with safety in mind

Happy New Year! Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to make those resolutions.

Whether it’s to improve your vehicle maintenance record, boost retention rates, mitigate driver violations or revamp your safety training program — or all of the above — January is the time to put a plan into motion.

But just like having a personal trainer at the gym, you don’t have to go about tackling your goals alone.

Brian Runnels, Reliance Partners’ vice president of safety, encourages motor carriers to...

What happens when an 18-wheeler gets a flat?

Flat tires affect thousands of truck drivers each year, and debris from blown tires can be a hazard to all motorists.

During RoadCheck 2021, tires accounted for 1,804 out-of-service (OOS) violations — 18.6% of all trucks parked during the three-day enforcement event in May. Tires were second only to brakes as a cause.

Issues can range from underinflated, worn out or defective tires to trucks with debris lodged between dual tires.

Generally, when trucks have flats while out on the road, drivers...

Safety is more than what is printed in your DMV study manual before you take your written test. Or before you step in and buckle up for your first mile at the wheel.

The study manuals are different for every class of license in each state. The...

FMCSA asks: How much is the industry using the HOS waiver?

With another extension of the emergency hours-of-service waiver looming, federal regulators want the trucking industry to let them know to what extent carriers and drivers are actually taking advantage of the exemption.

The first-of-its-kind, 50-state exemption was originally issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The order gives drivers and carriers more time to make deliveries without violating federal work-hour...

An earlier FreightWaves Classics article provided an overview of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). One of its key agencies is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA.

The FMCSA is the lead federal agency responsible for “regulating and providing safety oversight of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).” The agency’s mission is to reduce/prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.

Partnering with industry, state and local governments and safety...
