Outbound tender volumes — shipper requests for truckload capacity — jumped 16% over the average level of August this past week out of the Ontario market in Southern California. U.S. Xpress is going through a reorganization following a recent round of layoffs. The technology-driven Variant program will be merged into a larger Highway Services group, which will include the legacy over-the-road business and the USX freight brokerage. The company also announced a termination of the lease on Variant’s Atlanta headquarters due to the reduction in workforce and remote options.

In a call with analysts Thursday...

Holiday truckload demand stronger than in 2020

Chart of the Week: Outbound Tender Volume Index – USA SONAR: OTVI.USA

After underperforming 2020 over Thanksgiving, the Outbound Tender Volume Index (OTVI) that measures the amount of electronic requests for truckload capacity shippers send to carriers has been averaging over 10% higher than the previous year since Dec. 22. This trend is a sign that shippers still have plenty of freight to move heading into the new year.

The OTVI is an index with a base value of 10,000 based on the tender...

Are freight volumes hitting a high point? — #WithSONAR

with sonar header

On this episode of #WithSONAR, Luke Falasca and Kyle Taylor discuss the possibility of truckload volume hitting a new all-time high.

They use SONAR data and charts to look at how much volume is really flooding the market and whether there is any capacity on the horizon to help alleviate the stress.

Ocean imports are also increasing, which when coupled with near-record port congestion on the West Coast could cause a big Q4 push in truckload volume.

Import volumes continue to climb, creating bottlenecks at some of the largest ports in the U.S. Importers are scrambling to find a more reliable point of entry by booking freight coming into less-congested areas. Is West Coast freight here to stay?

Chart of the Week:  Outbound Tender Market Share – Los Angeles, Ontario, Chicago, Joliet SONAR: OTMS.LAX, OTMS.ONT, OTMS.CHI, OTMS.JOT

Chicago used to be considered the top freight market in the U.S. as a centralized location and solid infrastructure make it an ideal hub for distribution channels in the eastern half of the country. Understatement alert: Times have changed. Over the past two years, the Los Angeles markets have taken over as the nation’s leading point of origin. Trade wars and...

Consumer spending drove freight growth in 2020

Chart of the Week:  Outbound Tender Volume Index – USA, Personal Consumption Expenditures – Durable Goods SONAR: OTVI.USA, PCE.DG

Consumer spending on durable goods expanded dramatically in the second half of 2020, showing a significant connection to FreightWaves’ national Outbound Tender Volume Index (OTVI). Prior to the pandemic, this connection was not as clean thanks to a healthier mix of manufacturing and industrial activity. The biggest question now is what happens if and when this...

2020 closes with plenty (of freight) left in the tank

Chart of the Week:  Daily Customs Shipments, Outbound Tender Reject Index – USA SONAR: CSTM.USA, OTRI.USA

This final 2020 edition of the chart of the week combines the two most relevant statistics of the year: maritime import shipments and tender rejection rates. Before the pandemic, the two measures had little connection to each other. In 2019, container imports had time to sit in warehouses as shippers were able to plan and prepare for seasonal purchasing patterns to reemerge, allowing them to...
