Are startup investors getting past the FOMU cycle?

The same driverless technology that Kodiak Robotics plans to put on highways in late 2024 has application to the military, which sees leveraging commercially developed innovation as smarter than creating everything itself.

Following Kodiak’s reveal of its Ford F-150-based prototype autonomous vehicle for the U.S. Army on Monday, Kodiak founder and CEO Don Burnette and I discussed dual-use technology, the recent comings and goings in the autonomous trucking space and a thawing of investor...

Founders of shuttered Argo AI launch autonomous trucking startup

The founders of shuttered self-driving car startup Argo AI, which was abandoned by Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG, are starting an autonomous trucking business with $1 billion in backing from Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp.

“With our proprietary technology and expertise as well as the commitment from our long-term partner in SoftBank, we are confident we will revolutionize the trucking and freight industries,” Bryan Salesky, founder and CEO of Stack AV, said in a news release.

TuSimple begins catch-up on financial filings

TuSimple filed the first of four late financial documents this week. It’s easy to see why the autonomous truck software developer gave up freight hauling. It cost more than twice as much as it was seeing in revenue. And the company has just 250 U.S. employees after two rounds of layoffs and a refocus on Asian markets.

While other startups ran afoul of Nasdaq listing rules because their share price fell below $1 for more than 30 consecutive trading days, TuSimple found another way to get put on...

Are driverless trucks in California a dead issue?

Autonomous truck testing without drivers is allowed in 42 states. California isn’t among them. Barring a turnaround among legislators or a veto of legislation by Gov. Gavin Newsom, prospects are bleak.

The legislation is known as Assembly Bill 316. It was introduced following California restarting long-dormant framework discussions on heavy-duty autonomy under purview of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

“The bill is a direct reaction to the administration beginning to promulgate rules for AV...

TuSimple’s Nasdaq delisting threat delayed

TuSimple Holdings has won a delay until Sept. 30 to file delinquent financial reports with the Nasdaq, which is threatening to delist the autonomous trucking software maker from the exchange.

The company successfully appealed an earlier decision that would have removed its ticker symbol and forced it to trade over the counter, also known as the “pink sheets.”

In an 8-K filing Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, TuSimple said it will work to file quarterly reports from the third...
