Truck Tech: Who’s on first edition

Autonomous trucking is a far weightier topic than baseball, the subject of the famous “Who’s on first?” Abbott and Costello comedy classic. Determining the positions of truck makers and autonomous software developers might be more watchable than even rule-shortened games in the new MLB season.

Exclusive: TuSimple needs to win markets, customers as it stabilizes

TUCSON, Ariz. — Cheng Lu mostly watched from the sidelines for seven months as autonomous trucking startup TuSimple nearly imploded from the pressure of internal politics and external investigations. Upon returning as CEO in November after being ousted in an awkward succession, Lu quickly assessed the state of affairs and moved to stabilize the company.

So how is that going?

In his first public interview since being rehired to the top management post, Lu told FreightWaves that TuSimple is making...

With $1B in the bank, reputationally dinged TuSimple looks ahead

TUCSON, Ariz. — TuSimple Holdings needs closure on a raft of investigations before it can reclaim technology leadership in the nascent autonomous trucking industry. But a balance sheet with nearly $1 billion is a big advantage.

“Our runway is three years, and that’s excluding any strategic decision on China,” TuSimple Chief Financial Officer Eric Tapia told FreightWaves in an interview at the company’s testing operations site. “China’s a great business. They have some interesting initiatives...

Ousted TuSimple co-founder says frustrated employees came to him

TuSimple co-founder Xiaodi Hou claims his forced resignation from the autonomous trucking software startup came in retaliation for refusing to support the compensation package for Cheng Lu, the CEO he pushed out a year ago but who was rehired in November.

In a LinkedIn post, Hou claimed current and ex-employees of the autonomous trucking startup sought him. He did not go to them.

“It was time for me to step down from the board and move on with my life,” Hou wrote in the post on Tuesday. “And then...

TuSimple co-founder quits board as it probes employee poaching

In just over a year, TuSimple co-founder Xiaodi Hou proclaimed himself CEO of the autonomous trucking startup, was fired by independent directors, and now has quit the board over rumors he sought TuSimple employees to join him in a new company.

In a two-sentence 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, TuSimple said Hou had resigned “effective immediately.” Hou co-founded the company in 2015 and previously served as chief technology officer.

Feds close probe into TuSimple autonomous truck crash

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has closed its investigation into a heavily publicized crash of a TuSimple autonomous truck.

TuSimple said it responded to several FMCSA requests following the April 6 non-injury incident on Interstate 10 in Arizona. The probe closed with no penalties. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration declined to open a separate probe, the company said.

A driver-supervised autonomous truck took an unintended sharp left turn across a lane of...

As layoffs loom, TuSimple CEO protected by $15M in severance cash

With layoffs of potentially hundreds of employees looming, autonomous trucking startup TuSimple agreed to pay CEO Cheng Lu $15 million in cash if it ousts him a second time.

The terms of the agreement are spelled out in an 8-K filing Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The optics of such a payment compared to whatever severance is paid to laid-off employees are ugly. But having been burned once, Lu assured that shortening his second stay would be expensive to the company.

“It is...
