Great Lakes Dredge to design first Jones Act-compliant vessel for offshore wind subsea rock installation

Great Lakes Dredge & DockCorp. announced today it is moving forward with the design and development of the first U.S.-flagged Jones Act inclined fall pipe vessel for subsea rock installation.

The vessel represents a critical advancement in building the future of the new U.S. offshore wind industry, including establishing a U.S.-based rock supply chain network spanning eastern seaboard states with active offshore wind leases, the Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.-based dredgiing company said.

Offshore wind energy developers will be recruiting at a first-ever U.S. job fair for the industry, an Aug. 18 virtual event hosted by the Business Network for Offshore Wind.

It’s part of the non-profit group’s International Partnership Forum, an annual conference that this year moved to online as a result of covid-19. The OSW CareerMatch Job Fair will feature companies leading the emerging U.S. offshore wind market, including Dominion Energy, Principal Power, Siemens Gamesa, MHI Vestas and Avangr...

Vard, ABS plan for first U.S.-flag offshore wind service operations vessel

Vard describes its 215'x55.7' SOV as

In the offshore wind energy business, one of the biggest questions is when U.S. shipyards will step up and build a new generation of support vessels.

ABS and Vard offered one prospect, when the classification society announced it had awarded an “approval in principle” for a Jones Act-compliant version of Vard’s 4 07 service operation vessel (SOV) – a major step up from the first generation of crew transfer vessels for U.S. wind operations.

Vard describes its 218’x55.7’ SOV as “a suitable vessel...

With momentum building for East Coast wind power, the American Wind Energy Association announced Laura Smith Morton to lead policy and regulatory efforts on behalf of the U.S. industry’s offshore wind sector.

Morton moved in July 8 to her new role as AWEA’s senior director for policy and regulatory affairs for offshore wind, as Vineyard Wind, Ørsted and other developers push to obtain permits and begin developing their federal leases off New England and the Mid-Atlantic states.

Offshore wind energy developer  Ørsted was awarded a 1,100-megawatt commitment by New Jersey Friday for its Ocean Wind project off Atlantic City, the single largest award to date for the budding U.S. industry.

“After so many years New Jersey is finally open for business as far as offshore wind is concerned,” said Joseph Fiordaliso, president of the state Board of Public Utilities, after a unanimous vote to choose Ørsted to build the project on its federal continental shelf lease.

BMT offshore wind vessel has a whale workaround

Two crew transfer boats will be built for offshore wind developer Ørsted. Ørsted rendering

Designers of crew transfer vessels (CTVs) for offshore wind energy face a number of challenges – starting with the core mission of delivering workers in speed and comfort to turbines at sea.

In the emerging U.S. offshore wind industry there’s another unique demand: working safely around migration routes of the highly endangered northern right whale.

“It’s something we’ve not come across yet in Europe as we don’t have this right whale issue,” said James Lewis, project manager for specialized ship...

U.S. offshore wind industry will need networked ports

The U.S. East Coast is the world’s most promising market for offshore wind energy, but its ports all have limitations and will need to be used together by the new industry.

That was the assessment of experts at the International Partnering Forum 2019, a major wind energy conference hosted by the Business Network for Offshore Wind that attracted 1,400 people from offshore wind developers and associated industries to New York City last week.

“There’s not a Bremenhaven in the U.S.,” said Jay A....

Next-gen offshore wind vessels: More speed, size, comfort

The next generation of crew transfer vessels (CTVs) for the budding U.S. offshore wind industry could draw on European trends toward more speed, air cushioned hulls and even hybrid power.

But with groundbreaking possible on the first major U.S. project by year’s end, wind companies should already be looking toward those designs, builders said Wednesday at the IPF19 wind conference in New York.

“The big demand for CTVs is during construction, and you will need them long before you think you will”...

The U.S. offshore wind industry is on the verge of starting its first major projects, but needs more coordination among East Coast states and predictability in federal leasing and permitting, advocates stressed Tuesday at the opening of the International Partnering Forum 2019 in New York City.

New York State’s goal of generating 9 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030 “has really helped push the U.S. industry to the tipping point,” said Liz Burdock, president and CEO of the Business Network...

The biggest offshore wind energy lease auction to date brought in $405 million for three tracts off New England, in what federal officials call a signal of momentum for the budding U.S. industry.

“Wow. It’s the highest-grossing (wind power)  lease ever. We are truly blown away by this result,” said Walter Cruickshank, acting director of the federal Bureau of Offshore Energy, in a telephone press conference shortly after 32 rounds of bidding closed around 11:20 a.m. Friday.
