Flooding, road closures in Upper Midwest entering 4th week

Flooding has kept sections of state and U.S. highways closed for three weeks in the Upper Midwest, showing no signs of letting up the next few days.

Where it started

From April 22 to 24, parts of eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota were drenched with 2 to 4 inches of rain, as well as rapid snow melt. Several more rounds of rain followed, including another inch Monday.

Places like Grand Forks and Fargo already have month-to-date rain surpluses for May, with totals so far of 1.71 and 2.27,...

Upper Midwest flooding could last until late May

Parts of the Upper Midwest have been flooded for at least a week — and there may be no relief in sight until late May.

It started with heavy rain the weekend of April 23-24 — up to 4 inches in some spots — and rapid snow melt. Then there was an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain and a bit more snow melt the following weekend.

Areas along the Red River of the North and many of its tributaries overflowed their banks, but it didn’t happen right away.

Canadian Pacific, CN argue which is better for grain shippers

Rivals CN (NYSE: CNI) and Canadian Pacific (NYSE: CP) each are claiming that they have the support of Upper Midwest grain shippers in the battle over which railway gets to merge with Kansas City Southern (NYSE: KSU).

Kansas City Southern (KCS) and CN agreed to merge in May, resulting in KCS disentangling itself from earlier plans to merge with CP. But CP has said it is still interested in acquiring KCS if the CN-KCS merger falls through.

Elevated wildfire risk developing in Upper Midwest

CN eyes opportunities in Upper Midwest with new inland terminal

Canadian railway CN (NYSE: CNI) seeks to expand its reach into the Upper Midwest through a new inland distribution terminal in New Richmond, Wisconsin.

The facility will have an automotive compound for finished vehicles, as well as an intermodal terminal for shippers and receivers of greater Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. The railway expects the facility to open on March 1.

Union Pacific eyes Upper Midwest for intermodal opportunities

Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) is hoping to attract more intermodal customers in the Upper Midwest now that it has an intermodal terminal in Minneapolis.

The Union Pacific (UP) Twin Cities Intermodal Terminal has opened, and intermodal service to Minneapolis will start in January, UP said Friday.
