UPS pilots won’t fly if Teamsters strike

The union representing UPS pilots says they will not cross picket lines if Teamsters drivers and package sorters walk off the job when the current contract expires Aug. 1, resulting in the immediate shutdown of the express logistics company’s global air operations.

UPS (NYSE: UPS) has 3,300 pilots who are represented by the Independent Pilots Association (IPA), a separate union from the Teamsters.

“If the Teamsters are on strike, we will honor that strike and we will not fly,” IPA spokesman Brian...

UPS "brown tails" lined up at an airport.

The union representing more than 3,300 UPS pilots has reached a tentative agreement with the express delivery company on a two-year contract extension, both sides separately announced late Tuesday. The pilots’ union for UPS (NYSE: UPS) says the express delivery company is not providing enough COVID-19 testing even as the infection surges among its members.

The Independent Pilots Association, which represents 3,000 crew members at UPS Airlines, on Monday said 100 pilots contracted the coronavirus in November, double the number of cases that occurred during the prior seven months. The union representing 3,000 UPS pilots says the number of members testing positive for COVID has significantly increased and complained the express carrier is not doing enough to protect air crews or bring them home when sick or hospitalized abroad.

More than 100 pilots are currently in quarantine compared to between 30 and 70 at any given time since the coronavirus pandemic began early this year, Brian Gaudet, spokesman for the Independent Pilots Association, told FreightWaves.

IPA President...
