Truck Tech: Summer ACTs edition

Truck Tech logo on blue background

Playing with Lego bricks to illustrate supply chain disruptions, how the passenger vehicle market mirrors the trucking industry, and Hyliion’s Hypertruck free rides — those and other musings from the ACT Research Seminar 67 this week in Columbus, Indiana.

Explain it to me like I’m a 4-year-old

When you see some of the full-size creations from Lego bricks, you know they are not just for children. Check the recommended ages on some of the boxes if you want evidence.

Those plastic bricks helped Paul...

Truck Tech: Down Under charging edition

Electric vehicle fast chargers are  critical to keeping power-hungry commercial trucks that run on battery power moving. Australia’s Tritium built its first direct-current fast charger a decade ago. Now, it is growing its U.S. presence. Tesla is taking hefty deposits for its battery-powered Semi, and Volvo Truck is sharing a guidebook  from its LIGHTS electrification project in California.

An Aussie solution to electric truck charging

The success of electric trucks rides on the ability to avoid...

Truck Tech: Hydrogen safety whistle edition

The Compressed Gas Association is calling out hydrogen safety as newcomers plan to make and distribute it as a transportation fuel; TuSimple is still rolling on its driverless pilot, it just won’t say exactly when.

Dropping the safety flag on hydrogen

Maybe you’ve heard of the Compressed Gas Association. Before a Dec. 6 press release announced the launch of the “Safety is Step One” hydrogen education campaign, I had not.  Hydrogen advocacy groups like the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association,...

Truck Talk: Making the case edition

This week, we’re looking at the meaning of electric trucks delivering groceries, autonomous trucks delivering watermelons and other “firsts” trying to make the case for advanced transportation technologies. And a sort of contrarian view on both.

Proving their mettle

Individually, claims of being first don’t always add up to being newsworthy. But taking a step back to consider the “points on the board” being scored by startup autonomous and electric truck companies may tell a different story.

Consid...

Volvo gets first double-digit order for Class 8 electric trucks

Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) will lease 14 VNR Electric daycabs to a Southern California food distributor. It is Volvo’s first double-digit order of zero-emission battery-electric tractors.

The truck leases and charging infrastructure will cost Quality Custom Distribution (QCD) about the same as diesel-powered trucks because of a $3.9 million grant to Volvo Financial Services from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Inland Port Program.

The port program consists of California’s largest...

FreightWaves Truck Talk: What does Workhorse’s past say about its future?

Never-ending story … Battery-electric delivery van maker Workhorse Group (NASDAQ: WKHS) lives on borrowed money. It always has. And while an incredible retail investor-driven run continues in the first weeks of 2021, Workhorse short interest is a whopping 29%, according to Fintel.ioi. That means almost one in three shares are held by borrowers betting the price will fall. A healthy level of short interest is typically 8-15%. Founded by Steve Burns as Amp Electric Vehicles, the company has...

8 questions with Brett Pope, Volvo Trucks electric vehicles director

The 12% federal excise tax (FET) on new heavy-duty trucks has lots of detractors who think the 103-year-old levy has long outlived its original purpose. That was to defray the costs of America fighting in World War I.

Brett Pope may or may not be for getting rid of the tax. He won’t say. But the director of electric vehicles at Volvo Trucks North America thinks waiving the tax on purchases of the VNR Electric regional hauler would help bring it closer to price parity with diesel models of the...
