Electric trucks find a sweet spot with inbound logistics

Using electric trucks for short, repeatable trips to assembly plants is expanding as more OEMs require suppliers to shush the noise and eliminate the diesel exhaust that accompany delivering incoming parts and components.

Nikola will replace batteries in fire-prone electric trucks

Nikola Corp. is telling customers it will replace the battery packs in its electric trucks, a worst-case scenario following several fires. Nikola is bringing all the trucks back to its Arizona plant but won’t say where or when it will get pack replacements.

Volvo Group posts solid Q3 results but sees slowdown ahead

Sweden’s Volvo Group reported slightly higher deliveries but fewer truck orders in the third quarter as it prepares for a slower market in 2024.

Volvo is the first of the four major OEMs to report results for the July-September period, typically the slowest of the year. Paccar Inc., Traton Group and Daimler Truck will report in coming weeks.

UAW employees will strike at Mack Trucks after rejecting contract

United Auto Workers-represented employees at Mack Trucks overwhelmingly voted down a tentative agreement Sunday. They plan to strike operations in three states Monday.

The strike involves 3,900 workers at Volvo Group operations plants in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida. It coincides with but is separate from an ongoing UAW walkout at Detroit’s three automakers — General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram Trucks.

Mack Trucks settles with UAW on longer agreement

Mack Trucks and the United Auto Workers tentatively agreed to a new five-year labor agreement. It is a year longer than the previous pact.

The longer agreement follows a six-year agreement between sibling Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) and the UAW. A five-week strike preceded that deal in 2021.

Mack is part of the Greensboro, North Carolina-based Volvo Group North America, which includes VTNA.
