Real estate investors surge into electric truck charging

Somewhere around the middle of the Netflix movie “The Founder,” actor Michael Keaton’s Ray Kroc character is told that his franchise success turns on real estate, not flipping hamburgers.

The same could be said of the nascent electric truck charging business. Every electric charging depot needs land. As part of a multiprong strategy, the biggest real estate developers and a host of well-funded startups are gobbling up acreage for future sites.

The opportunity is enormous. The California Energy...

Would Navistar be a good autonomous partner for Kodiak Robotics?

“All of the ladies attending the ball are requested to gaze in the faces found on the dance cards. Please then remember and don’t get too close to one special one. He will take your defenses and run.” — Song by David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills

Navistar has remained quiet about its plans for autonomous trucking since breaking off a two-and-a-half-year partnership with TuSimple in December.

Privately held Kodiak Robotics is emerging as a leader in the shrinking field of autonomous...

WattEV opens public truck charging depot in Long Beach port

Nikola Tre models and WattEV chargers

Megawatt charging depots so far are behind-the-fence operations exclusive to the fleets that operate them. Truck-as-a-Service (TaaS) startup WattEV changes that when it opens its first charging-for-all installation at the Port of Long Beach.

“A lot of competitors have been talking about infrastructure, but we actually have equipment in the ground,” Salim Youssefzadeh, WattEV founder and CEO, told FreightWaves ahead of opening its first public changing depot Monday at the Port of Long Beach.

“We...

What’s behind the electrolyzer craze for green hydrogen?

Making hydrogen today is a pretty dirty business. But that is changing as more companies seek ways to decarbonize the economy.

One increasingly popular approach is applying renewable energy sources to centuries-old electrolysis to split molecules of hydrogen — the most abundant element in the universe — from its bonds with oxygen.

An electrolyzer separates water into oxygen and hydrogen, effectively the opposite of a fuel cell, which uses water and electricity to separate hydrogen and oxygen,...

Want a Volvo electric truck? Go for Gold or go away

Volvo VNR Electric truck at sunset

DUBLIN, Va. — Like a parent walking a young child across the street, Volvo Trucks North America is holding its customers’ hands when it comes to Class 8 electric trucks — whether they like it or not.

VTNA is the early leader among OEMs selling electric trucks in the U.S. It holds more than 60% of the nascent market compared to about an 11% total American market share.

Over time, Volvo’s dominance likely will shrink. Especially when U.S. market leader Daimler Truck North America begins regular...

Truck Tech: Summer jobs edition

Layoffs get the headlines but a surprising number of electrification startups are adding employees even as they try to raise more money. Volvo is using two dealerships and a five new charging points to create a corridor in California. And the Diesel Technology Forum graphically shows once again that fossil fuels are still king in commercial transportation.
