Why should truckers upgrade 3G devices soon?

Time is running out for trucking companies to upgrade or replace third-generation mobile devices to 5G services because the major cellular providers say there’s no plans to postpone deadlines to sunset 3G devices. Failure to do so could result in truckers getting dinged for hours-of-service violations if logging devices can’t function properly.

AT&T, which plans to end its 3G wireless network on Feb. 22, has been communicating with business customers for nearly three years about transitioning to...

FMCSA to truckers: Is your ELD slated to be phased out?

The clock is ticking for truckers to upgrade or replace their third-generation (3G)-reliant ELDs — or face possible hours-of-service violations — as major cellular providers move to 5G network services in 2022.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued a reminder to truck drivers on Friday about mobile carriers sunsetting 3G technology and urged drivers to make the switch as early as February to avoid racking up potential ELD violations.

“Once a 3G network is no longer supported, it...

FMCSA warns carriers on ELD data-services shutdown

Federal regulators are attempting to head off ELD violations by urging carriers to plan ahead for the shutdown of third-generation (3G) mobile technology by major cellular companies.

Wireless providers such as AT&T and T-Mobile are phasing out 3G to make space for 5G. ELDs that are only compatible with 3G will no longer be able to transmit data to the back office or roadside law enforcement — effectively rendering the ELDs obsolete and eventually landing them on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety...

Will your ELD be obsolete in 2022?

Have you heard about the looming 3G sunset? This upcoming transition, which will largely take place in early 2022, has the potential to dramatically disrupt electronic logging device (ELD) communications for hundreds of thousands of devices. You can avoid being left without a functional device by talking with your ELD provider now.

This situation has come about because the 5G, or fifth generation, communications technology being used by an increasing number of mobile devices needs more spectrum...

Carrier networks relying on 3G don’t have the time they think

While the 3G sunset deadlines will wrap in  2022 for cellular providers like Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, there are still some companies in the  trucking industry that have hesitated to upgrade their 2G or 3G cellular devices to 4G LTE for various reasons: budgetary concerns, uncertainty over which tech vendor to use and a belief that the deadline will continue to get pushed out. In a poll of carriers that haven’t yet taken action, 14% said they simply lack the understanding of what a 3G sunset...

Private fleets are an expensive response to ongoing volatility

The hunt for available capacity is the ongoing refrain since the pandemic shifted consumer buying habits. According to a recent McKinsey survey of CPG companies, 80% of those companies have no expectation that pandemic-fueled transportation costs will decline anytime soon.

A May report from BSI, a London-based standards and supply chain intelligence firm, suggested that while immediate effects of the pandemic are easing worldwide, the long tail of the pandemic is ongoing and may include...

FreightWaves LIVE Recap: Cargo Transporters upshifts telematics

With the clock ticking on the 3G cellular network and the need to transition to higher speeds relied upon by telematics devices, carriers are looking for the right partner — if they haven’t already found one — to make that shift.

For Claremont, North Carolina-based Cargo Transporters, a truckload carrier operating approximately 500 power units and 1,800 trailers, SkyBitz was up to the task.

“We started looking about two years ago into how we were going to handle [the sunsetting of 3G],” Cargo...

Still relying on 3G networks? It is time for an upgrade

The introduction of 5G — alongside widespread adoption of 4G LTE-enabled devices — has prompted major players to shut down older networks. Companies relying on older cellular networks, including 3G, CDMA and 2G, to run their remote monitoring and telematics applications will soon start to experience performance issues and reliability drops ahead of widespread network shutdowns.

As 3G support is phased out, companies operating devices that utilize 2G or 3G and are not compatible with 4G LTE...

Fleets delaying 3G-to-4G transition may face disruptions before sunset deadlines

Telecom providers are currently contending with two major shifts: the gradual phasing out of 3G networks and the introduction of the highly anticipated 5G infrastructure — one that promises sweeping advances in automation and supply chain communication.

While trucking fleets still using 3G devices have, in some cases, until the end of 2022 to transition to 4G/LTE, many are procrastinating — and understandably so. Outside of the financial cost of upgrading, they will have to park their fleets,...

Why fleets shouldn’t dread 3G to 4G transition

Trucks and trailers throughout the country currently utilize tens of thousands of 3G telematics devices — devices that were purchased before 2018 and into 2019 and are marching toward obsolescence. In order to roll out the 5G networks, cellular providers have to retire 3G networks and free up as much bandwidth as possible.

While Verizon isn’t shutting down its 3G network until the end of 2022, T-Mobile’s sunset date will arrive as soon as October 2021. AT&T’s date is February 2022, and Sprint...
