Cummins will make electric medium-duty truck prototype for Isuzu

Cummins Inc., which signed a long-term deal last year to make diesel powertrains for Isuzu medium-duty trucks, is adding a Class 6 battery-electric powertrain prototype to the mix that will go into customer demonstrations in Q2.

The PowerDrive 6000 is used in Gillig transit and Bluebird school buses. A PowerDrive 8000 version will go into a Kalmar terminal tractor this year capable of pulling gross vehicle weights from 80,000 to 195,000 pounds, Cummins announced in December.

Get used to the name: Meritor’s 14Xe electric powertrain becoming ubiquitous

Meritor Inc., a supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking, aftermarket and electric powertrains, announced a raft of deals Tuesday that will make the name of its 14Xe chassis hard to ignore as it spreads throughout trucks, buses and industrial applications.

It is a big deal because Meritor (NYSE: MTOR) competes with other suppliers, including Dana Inc., BorgWarner and Eaton Corp., in pursuing a conversion of significant portions of their business aimed at internal combustion engine-driven...

Growth in carbon neutral RNG spotlights debate on electric- vs. renewable-powered trucks

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is having a moment, and California, naturally, is at the epicenter.

In 2020, a company that sells renewable natural gas to California medium- and heavy-duty trucking fleets can make as much as $10-$12 per diesel gallon, according to Cliff Gladstein, president of Gladstein, Neandross & Associates (GNA), a leading clean transportation consulting firm.

“You can make a lot of money,” he said, repeating himself for emphasis. “A lot of money.”

Simultaneously the environmental...

California ban on diesel opens new front in hydrogen vs. electric trucking battle

Another front opened in the battle to level the playing field for zero-emission vehicles this week when nine California legislators sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom urging him to take a “technology-neutral” approach to decarbonization and not focus the state’s transportation sector investments solely on battery-electric vehicles, especially in medium- and heavy-duty trucking.

“We stand deeply concerned about the impacts of medium- and heavy-duty trucks, buses, vessels, locomotives and off-road...
