Flexport’s Ryan Petersen on tariffs, China and fuel surcharges

CNBC has interviewed Flexport’s CEO, Ryan Petersen, on a range of subjects: from the choices facing Apple if its products are hit by tariffs, as Trump has suggested, to the “stickiness” of falling fuel prices, and how companies such as DHL, he claims, don’t reduce surcharges in a timely manner. It’s an interesting interview – but one has to wonder how much Flexport would have had to pay for the …

Analysis: can Kuehne + Nagel really be eyeing a Panalpina takeover?

The idea that Panalpina “has to go sooner rather than later” is growing in popularity among my sources, notwithstanding public remarks made by Kuehne + Nagel management on Friday and Panalpina on Sunday.
However, beware the hype. I may very well be wrong, but I doubt K+N has any serious intention to take over its smaller domestic rival in its current form, although the ousting of chairman Peter Ulber could trigger …

Unlicensed operators wreak havoc in Latin American forwarding sector

“An incredible rise” in unlicensed, unregulated one-man forwarding operations is posing a threat to Latin America’s forwarding community.
Vice president of Interworld Freight Farouk Gomati told The Loadstar the surge in “effectively illegitimate” operators was chipping away at profit margins.
“In most Latin American countries the word loyalty between clients and forwarders doesn’t exist, they will drop you for $10,” he said.
Small forwarders in particular were feeling the pinch, he added,...

Fishing boats to small stores, Amazon will stop at nothing to win in India

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a few specks of land in the Bay of Bengal that, until this week, were comparatively little-known. Then came news that a US missionary had been killed by an uncontacted indigenous tribe – a status that the Indian government has worked hard to maintain – as he tried to land at their protected island. Other Andaman locations are not off-limits to the modern world …
