APM Terminals Mobile announces US$60 million rail expansion project

APM Terminals Mobile has decided to invest around US$60 million in the expansion of its rail infrastructure capabilities.

Specifically, Maersk-owned port operator plans to develop additional tracks, rail yard storage space and improved access from the berth to the railyard. APM Terminals said the new project is expected to enhance the US terminal’s productivity, safety and supply chain speed.

Port of Mobile achieves record container year

Port of Mobile in Alabama, US reported record container shipping numbers in the previous year, handling 563,191 TEUs, representing an 11% growth compared with 2021 box volumes.

Meanwhile, intermodal rail volumes continued a 31-month record of triple-digit growth, ending the year with a 142% increase over 2021.

Additionally, the container terminal handled a record 312 vessels, translating to an increase of 75 vessels from 2021.

Stakeholders reach potential settlement on Gulf Coast Amtrak service

Some level of Amtrak passenger rail service could be established on the Gulf Coast, based on a recent filing submitted to the Surface Transportation Board.

In a joint filing Monday, Amtrak, CSX (NASDAQ: CSX), Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) and the Alabama State Port Authority asked the board to hold off on a Nov. 30 hearing on Amtrak’s plans to restore Gulf Coast service between Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans because the parties have a potential settlement within sight.

Dockworkers strike fears at Port of Mobile amid record container volumes

A potential dockworker strike might launch at the Port of Mobile in Alabama, US as the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 1410 and CSA Equipment Company, a stevedoring provider at the port, do not come to an agreement on workers’ payments.

Port of Mobile on track to surpass 500,000 TEU in 2022

The Alabama Port Authority has announced July 2022 was its busiest month ever for containerised cargo, breaking the 50,000 TEU mark for the first time since container port operations began in 2008.

In a year-over-year comparison, July’s figures reflect a growth rate of 184.7% for intermodal cargo and 35.8% for dry and reefer containers.

CSX, NS and port push to keep Amtrak proceeding on track

Regulators to conduct hearing on CP’s plan to merge with KCS
