On May 25, 1878, U.S. Army officer and civil engineer Frederick Mears was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, Frederick J. Mears, was a career Army cavalry officer, and the Mears family lived in a number of military posts in the American West toward the end of the Indian Wars period after the Civil War.

Regulators gear up for rule setting minimum train crew size

The nation’s top rail regulator confirmed that the Federal Railroad Administration is on track to issue a proposed rulemaking this fall on one-person train crews, including minimum requirements depending on the type of rail operation.

Alaska, South Dakota secure funding for rail projects

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has announced more than $6.9 million in funding for freight rail projects in Alaska and South Dakota.

Monday’s announcement by FRA follows a tweet by President Donald Trump, who said separately on Saturday that he would be issuing a presidential permit granting the construction of a freight railroad between Alaska and the Canadian province of Alberta (see below).
