Amazon concentrates parcel freighters at US air hubs, report says

Amazon’s private cargo airline, Amazon Air, took a different approach with its North American and European networks during the past 12 months. The air logistics unit’s meteoric growth has ended after seven years, but the company was able to maintain operating levels at a time when many cargo...

The air logistics arm of Amazon is closing its regional air hub at Leipzig/Halle International Airport in Germany in response to a downturn in e-commerce sales and parcel volumes that has also forced rival express carriers to downsize their air networks to match lower volumes.

Hawaiian Airlines received the first of 10 Airbus A330-300 converted freighters at its Honolulu base earlier this month and will begin flying it under contract to retail giant Amazon in October, CEO Peter Ingram said Tuesday during a phone briefing about the company’s second-quarter results.

The carrier will spend the next few months familiarizing air, ground and maintenance crews with the aircraft and implementing standard operating procedures, he said.

Wall Street sours on ATSG freighter spend during cargo slowdown

Cargo-focused Air Transport Services Group blamed disappointing first-quarter results on slower business at its charter passenger airline Omni Air and warned that persistent inflation, which is driving up costs for maintenance and travel for flight crews shuttling between assignments, would dampen expected profits for the year.

On the positive side, utilization of the cargo fleet actually increased and leasing demand remains high for aircraft scheduled for freighter conversions despite weak...

Amazon will use Hawaiian Airlines to fly its first Airbus freighters on primary cargo routes and to Hawaii beginning in the second half of 2023, the airline’s top executive said late Friday.

The retail giant selected Hawaiian Airlines because of the carrier’s familiarity with the A330-300 aircraft, cargo handling experience, track record completing flights and on-time performance as a passenger airline, according to President and CEO Peter Ingram.
