American Queen suspends cruises until 2021

American Queen Steamboat Co. (AQSC) has suspended cruises through year’s end and earlier notified states of plans to lay off 250 crew starting Sept. 24 as fallout from Covid-19 persists for passenger vessels.

The New Albany, Ind.-based overnight cruise operator posted on its site that none of its four vessels, including the new American Countess, would be sailing on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Columbia or Snake rivers through Dec. 31.

American Queen suspends ship operations

American Queen Steamboat Co. Saturday said it would suspend all ship operations and resume service April 12 because of coronavirus problems nationwide.

The New Albany, Ind.-based company said it made the decision “following widespread governmental restrictions across ports, cities and public institutions.”

American Queen Steamboat Co. is acquiring two vessels – the original Cape Cod Light and Cape May Light – to expand its reach to the Great Lakes and maybe farther.

Terms of the deal for the Bahamas-flagged Victory I and Victory II marketed by Miami-based Victory Cruise Lines were not disclosed. The transaction which includes the Victory brand is expected to close in early January 2019, American Queen said Monday.
