Market Insight: Pre-Christmas (M&A) supper with MSC, Mærsk & Bolloré

Hustle and bustle.
Welcome to the Forward Logistics Matrix age, the most exciting era in the most exciting sector – made up of several very complex subsets – in the world, where the next move in the M&A domino game will be totally detached from the mainstream/trade headlines.
And where subtle equilibrium-damaging forces in the supply chain, as we knew it, are at play.

Maersk has signed a four-year contract with FMCG and food production giant Unilever to provide operational management of its global ocean and air freight transport.
The agreement will also see the carrier develop and manage Unilever’s International Control Tower Solution, which will build on the Virtual Ocean Control Tower debuted earlier this year and be underpinned by Maersk´s digital supply chain platform, NeoNav, a core part of the agreement.

A vision at sea: Maersk’s methanol-powered vessels taking shape

Maersk released images for its dual fuel methanol-powered vessels.

A.P. Møller – Maersk entered an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in August to build eight large dual-fuel container vessels, powered by carbon-neutral methanol or very low sulfur fuel oil.

Now Maersk has released a computer-generated image and video of what the vessels will look like.

On the wires: Mærsk vs MSC – adult thumb-sucking

Kudos to the writers at ShippingWatch for noticing how narrow the gap between Mærsk and MSC has become in terms of fleet size: “MSC could be one ship away from overtaking Maersk as world’s largest container line”.
Firstly, stories with headlines like this always win readers (I’m a complete sucker for them, no matter how pointless they sometimes seem) because everyone supposedly loves a league table, and few spectacles are as …

Market Insight: Goodbye sea forwarders, says carefree Mærsk (but we can sell you air!)

The worst nightmare of a brilliant CFO who talked to me well before Covid-19, behind close doors four years ago – when still so many referred to the freight forwarders as the smart ones in the chain – has become reality.
“They own the assets”
And that mere thought, you could tell from his eyes and body language, sent shivers down his spine as his company’s margins – yes those of a …

Maersk expands logistics supermarket with airfreight investments

A Maersk cargo jet takes off. Plane has white fuselage and blue tail with a star on it.

Ocean shipping giant A.P. Møller – Maersk on Tuesday further expanded into the airfreight market with the planned acquisition of German freight forwarder Senator International and investments in new cargo aircraft.

The moves are part of the company’s recent strategy to diversify beyond the volatile ocean freight sector and be a logistics supermarket that meets the transportation needs of large global shippers, which can pick service levels and transit speed based on whether time, cost or...
