Port of LA threatens penalties for empty boxes left at clogged-up terminals

To nobody’s surprise, the spectre of late dwell charges on containers at the prime US port complex receded yet another week yesterday, as the port authorities of Los Angeles and Long Beach deferred a decision until 27 December.
However, the port of LA raised the spectre of charges for empty boxes clogging up terminals.
Executive director Gene Seroka said last week 60% of empty containers stayed nine days or longer at LA …

Anger in Australia as container detention fees climb

Australia’s ongoing port congestion has left transport operators fuming over mounting container detention charges.
According to the Container Transport Alliance of Australia (CTAA), the current bottlenecks are caused by high peak season volumes, Covid-related labour shortages, terminal equipment malfunctions and lingering industrial relations disruptions.
CTAA director Neil Chambers told The Loadstar: “The biggest delays have been occurring at the port of Melbourne, where all three container...

Box lines firmly in control – charging ‘what they like’ on almost every trade

Container freight indices are on the rise again, but even at their highly elevated levels they mask the true cost of shipping.
For example, the Freightos Baltic Index (FBX) North European component jumped by 6% this week, to $7,791 per 40 ft – a huge 450% increase on the rate a year ago, but still unlikely to turn the heads of carriers that can easily fill ships with containers paying double …

Shippers brace for fresh price hikes in the ‘new normal’ for ocean freight

Shippers are bracing themselves for a fresh onslaught of freight rate hikes and peak season surcharges (PSS) from April, as ocean carriers reinforce their supply chain dominance across tradelanes.
Carriers have begun to focus on the traditionally low-revenue backhaul routes in order to restore rates to levels that will incentivise them to make equipment available for cargo shipments, rather than using the default option of deadheading empty containers back to Asia.
For …

No sympathy for carriers from shippers who must foot the bill for bunker hikes

Higher fuel costs are triggering increases in ocean carrier bunker surcharges, adding more misery for shippers already struggling with record high freight rates and additional fees.
Today’s price for low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) at Rotterdam is just under $500 per ton, which is up 25% since the beginning of the year and some 60% higher than in November.
And carriers are busy resetting their fuel increase recovery mechanisms, effective today or from …

More misery for shippers with return of bunker surcharges on the radar

As oil prices head north again, ocean carriers are preparing to ramp up low-sulphur fuel surcharges to add to the misery of shippers struggling with sky-high freight rates, surcharges and premium fees.
Since early September, the price of Brent crude has increased by 41%, to $55 a barrel, with an 8% spike alone last week driven by Saudi Arabia’s pledge to cut output.
During the same period, heavy fuel oil (HFO), consumed …

Fury at another new surcharge: carriers ‘cashing in’ on a self-created crisis

Freight forwarders are “exasperated” by the latest surcharge added to their already sky-high bill by shipping lines.
It’s an “Emergency Space Surcharge”, levied by CMA CGM, of $200 per teu from 15 December from south eastern Indian ports to major destinations in Europe and Central and South America.
CMA CGM imposed a similar surcharge on 1 March for some routes out of north Europe.
But forwarders now say they have had enough.
“Forwarders do …

GSF backs India’s call for return to ‘all-inclusive’ ocean freight rates

The Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF) is backing India’s push for “all-inclusive” ocean freight rates, claiming carrier surcharges disproportionately impact cargo owners in developing countries.
Last week, Indian carriers and forwarders criticised the government’s plan to remove carriers’ ability to levy surcharges, arguing it would be unlikely to reduce costs and could put local exporters at a competitive disadvantage.
However, the GSF claimed all-inclusive rates would bring “great benefit to...

More misery for UK importers: Maersk hikes import haulage tariff on Brexit Day

Maersk has announced plans to increase its import haulage tariff for the UK and Ireland on 1 January, as freight rates continue to spike by “crazy” amounts.
The timing could not be more inopportune, adding further misery to importers and a port sector bracing itself for what is expected to be “utter chaos” in the new, and as yet unknown, trade regime between the EU and the UK.
Maersk said the “adjustment” …

Bangladeshi apparel makers demand withdrawal of congestion surcharges

Shippers around the world are fed up with carrier costs – the latest group to complain to their government is in Bangladesh.
Garment makers have demanded government take immediate steps to withdraw the emergency cost recovery surcharge (ECRS) carriers have slapped on because of congestion at ports.
In a letter to the shipping ministry, Chittagong Port Authority and Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association (BSAA), the manufacturers say the apparel sector and other industries …
