Coast Guard seeks comments to improve inland waterways ATON system

The Coast Guard is conducting an assessment of the shallow draft waterway systems, the fourth in a series of studies to determine the navigation requirements for mariners in the U.S. Marine Transportation System (MTS).The Waterways Analysis and Management System (WAMS) study will help the Coast Guard to determine the aids to navigation (ATON) requirements in the shallow draft waterway systems which includes all navigable waterways of the U.S. less than 12 feet.

Oldest Coast Guard cutter to turn 75 in November

When the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Smilax (WLIC-315) was commissioned in 1944, allied forces had landed at Normandy five months earlier and had another 10 months of fighting ahead before victory in Europe and the Pacific would bring World War II to an end.

With nearly seven and half decades of water in her wake, the Smilax is the oldest Coast Guard cutter in service today. She turns 75 on Nov. 1.
