Bay and Bay sells tank trucking unit to Foodliner parent

Refrigerated carrier Bay and Bay announced it has sold its tank trucking unit to the McCoy Group, the parent of Foodliner and Quest Liner, which combine to make the largest food-grade bulk fleet in the U.S.

Dubuque, Iowa-based Foodliner will run the operation out of the current location in Burnsville, Minnesota.

Financial terms of the transaction were not included.

After some of Minnesota trucking and logistics company Bay & Bay Transportation’s IT systems started acting up on Dec. 1, it soon became apparent that the cause was something familiar — and alarming: a ransomware attack. 

Hackers intent on extorting the Eagan-based carrier had deployed malware to encrypt data on the company’s systems. The company had been down this road before. A ransomware attack in 2018 crippled its systems and led the company to pay the criminals.

Independent contractors see pay bump at Bay & Bay

Industry continues to advance driver pay

Bay & Bay Transportation announced Friday it is raising pay for independent contractors by 20 cents per mile.

The Eagan, Minnesota-based carrier said effective immediately, base pay for contractors will be in a range of $1.25 to $1.70 for loaded miles and will be $1.10 for empty miles. Contractors will continue to receive fuel surcharge rates as well as fuel discounts with the company’s preferred providers.

More carriers increasing driver pay

Driver pay on the rise

A couple of truckload carriers have raised driver pay heading into 2021. Beacon Transport announced Monday a 3-cents-per-mile pay increase for new drivers effective Jan. 1.

The La Vergne, Tennessee-based truckload carrier said the increase is one of the largest in its 20-year history and places pay for all new drivers at 50 cents per mile or higher.
