IKEA, CMA CGM, GoodShipping Program to test marine bio-fuel oil

IKEA Transport & Logistics Services, CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and the Port of Rotterdam will collaborate in a first of its kind partnership to test and scale the use of sustainable marine bio-fuel oil. The test will begin with a bunkering of the marine bio-fuel oil on a CMA CGM container vessel on March 19th.

The GoodShipping Program is facilitating the test. The program is a sustainable initiative dedicated to decarbonising ocean freight.

Shell joins W2C Rotterdam project for sustainable fuels

Shell joined as equity partner with Air Liquide, Enerkem, Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals) and the Port of Rotterdam in the W2C, a proposed project to be the first of its kind in Europe to make valuable chemicals and bio-fuels out of non-recyclable waste materials.

The EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) coming into effect in 2021, as well as other environmental initiatives such as the Circular Economy Package are creating an ideal environment for leading companies to drive...

EIA: US biofuels production, consumption, and trade stable in 2020

EIA launched its February  2019 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), according to which several recent trends in US biofuels markets will continue in 2020. In the outlook the production of fuel ethanol and net imports of biomass-based diesel remains the same, whereas net exports of fuel ethanol experience a decrease. State projects keep on supporting biofuel consumption through 2020; yet, biofuels remain a small share in the overall US liquid transportation fuels supply.

Specifically, the most...

IUMI: Fuel quality a growing challenge in IMO conventions

Fuel quality and safety was high on the agenda during the 100th session of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in early December. On the occasion, IUMI highlighted that biofuels are not properly catered for under the ISO standard 8217 and urged IMO to encourage ISO to embark on the urgent amendment of the ISO 8217 legislation to deal with biofuels and the 2020 sulphur cap.

MSC 100 agreed to include in its agenda for MSC 101 a new item on “Development of further measures to enhance the...

US EPA finalizes Renewable Fuel Standard for 2019

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule for the 2019 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program, with the total US renewable fuel volume requirement set 3% higher than the 2018 mandate, but nearly 30% lower than the statutory volume standards set forth by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007).

Namely, in addition to the past, EPA exercised its cellulosic waiver authority to lower volume standards for cellulosic biofuels since development is moving...

Report: Biofuels ‘the biggest pitfalls’ in the way to shipping decarbonization

Powering European ships with batteries, hydrogen or ammonia will decarbonise the fleet and require only half the amount of renewable electricity that less efficient solutions like synthetic methane or synthetic diesel will need, noted Transport & Environment in a new report revealing a Roadmap to Decarbonising European Shipping. The EU must set out in its 2050 Decarbonisation Strategy, to be published on 28 November, how it will end the use of fossil fuels in shipping, including marine fuel oil...

Biomass powered plant considered at Rotterdam

During November the European ARBAHEAT consortium will launch a research project to study the shift the ENGIE Ultra-SuperCritical coal-fired Rotterdam power plant into a biomass-fired heat and power plant.

This study aims to investigate how to cost-effectively convert the coal-fired power plant into a 100% sustainable biomass fired plant, able to deliver sustainable electricity along with sustainable heat. EU will fund this project with more than € 19 million.

The installation aspires to produce...
