Her husband, professor Ugur Sahin, with whom she cofounded the German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, said he thought cancer vaccines could be widely available...

Commentary: Washington must quickly build confidence in vaccine supply chain

The jubilation Americans felt about the speed with which Pfizer and BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Oxford University, and other groups developed their respective versions of a vaccine for COVID-19 has met the cold, hard reality of just how complex supply chains can be.

On one hand we read about how Israel has vaccinated 20% of its population within three weeks. On the other hand we are confronted with record deaths from COVID-19 in the United States in the midst of a very slow start to the...

Commentary: Adding COVID-19 vaccines to the holiday rush

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 early this year was certainly facilitated by the speed and efficiency of modern transportation. It is with a touch of irony, but with a lot more hope, that modern transportation can deliver the new vaccines rapidly and widely enough to help end the pandemic sometime next year.

The race by pharmaceutical companies to develop and...

Vaccine distribution, peak-season climax spawn parcel delivery storm

A tumultuous year for the parcel-delivery business has been taken to another level as parcel shippers find themselves competing with the most precious of cargoes for peak holiday season air and surface capacity.

To the amazement of many, the first of what are expected to be several vaccines to crush the novel coronavirus has been approved by federal regulators and shipped out before the end of 2020. The timing of these extraordinary developments has an unintended consequence in that it...

Pfizer Vaccine Data Breach Shows the Extent of Vaccine Cyber Threat

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) says it has been hit by a cyber-attack and documents relating to a Covid-19 vaccine have been accessed, reports BBC.

What happened?

BioNTech, which makes one of the vaccines in partnership with Pfizer, said its regulatory submission was accessed during the attack.

The EMA is working on approval of two Covid-19 vaccines, which it expects to conclude within weeks.

Will Trials Alter the 90% Efficacy of Pfizer Vaccine?

  • Pfizer and BioNTech said they had identified 94 cases of COVID-19 among 43,538 trial participants.
  • The split of cases between the groups suggested that the vaccine was more than 90% effective at preventing disease.
  • The trial will continue until a total of 164 COVID-19 cases are detected, so initial estimates of the vaccine’s effectiveness could change.
  • Pfizer and BioNTech reported that 42% of participants had racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Scientists have greeted with cautious...
