The Virginian Railway was a fairly small railroad (its main line was less than 500 miles), but it was built to extremely high standards and it “operated with precision-like efficiency” hauling coal as a competitor to the much larger Norfolk & Western Railway (N&W).

Coal Ship Departures Climb on Week to Eight According to cFLOW

  • Eight laden ships depart Baltimore, up two on week based on cFLOW data. 
  • Nine ships expected to arrive by August 4. 
  • It was the first time in more than seven years that more thermal coal was exported out of Baltimore than metallurgical coal.

Eight laden coal ships departed from Baltimore in the week ended July 28, up from six in the previous week, reports S&P Global Platts on their website.
