Georgia governor declares supply chain state of emergency

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has declared what was described as a supply chain state of emergency, thus becoming the first governor to respond in such a manner to a state’s supply chain challenges.

Kemp’s executive order, which goes into effect Saturday and runs until May 16, bans price gouging on goods and services such as diesel fuel and gasoline. It allows trucks with a gross vehicle weight — tractor, trailer and freight — of up to 95,000 pounds and with a maximum width of 10 feet to operate on...

Savannah harbor deepening is done

Like many milestones, the completion of the Savannah harbor deepening was marked by a ceremony attended by dignitaries.

“This is a great day for the state of Georgia and for the nation,” Gov. Brian Kemp said during Friday’s event. “The Port of Savannah is the gateway port for our region and the first choice of businesses serving the U.S. Southeast. GPA paving way for more vehicles at Port of Brunswick

The Georgia Ports Authority is adding a fourth berth at the Port of Brunswick, 85 acres for more auto processing and 360,000 square feet of warehousing in a $150 million project.

“We’re expanding berth and terminal capacity at both Colonel’s Island and Mayor’s Point so that we are ready to take on additional trade,” GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said during last week’s Brunswick State of the Port event. “The investments we are making will lay the groundwork for job growth and new...

Georgia Ports Authority scores record September

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) typically delivers its annual State of the Port address during a luncheon crowded with politicians and power brokers from global shipping lines.

To keep its audience entertained without a three-course meal, the GPA served up a virtual State of the Port event Thursday with a “College GameDay” format, complete with a play-by-play ticker of port activity scrolling across the bottom of the screen.

GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch threw out some cheer-worthy...

Port of Savannah volume down 9.7%

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported this week that while year-over-year container volume was down, May’s figures actually were better than expected.

The Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal moved 337,359 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in May, a decrease of 9.7% or 36,000 TEUs compared to the same month a year ago.

Executive Director Griff Lynch credited what the GPA called “an unshaken commitment to customer service” for the better-than-expected performance in May.

“I would like to...

Canceled calls signal ‘two really tough months’ for Georgia ports

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is battening down for a May with 37 blanked sailings. In a normal May, there are no canceled calls at Georgia’s ports.

“On the blanked sailings side, we had 20 in April. That was about 12% of all vessel calls. May is a big month. May is looking like 37, which would be 20 to 22% of our vessel calls if that shakes out. And then June comes in around the 15% mark right now, but that could change,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.

“There are going to be two...
