Pfizer vaccine exports keep Brussels Airport busy

Brussels Airport’s role as export hub for the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine contributed to a 21% increase in cargo volume in January.

Since the end of November, airlines operating from Brussels Airport have flown to more than 40 destinations with shipments of the Pfizer vaccine, the Brussels Airport Co. said earlier this month. Many vaccines are being carried by DHL Express and its partners. Large amounts are moving on commercial passenger or passenger-freighter flights operated by Singapore...

Airport cargo communities collaborate to optimize vaccine transport

Airports should use their influence as regional economic engines to organize logistics companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and regulators into close-knit cargo communities that collectively plan COVID-19 vaccine transport to prevent delays or product damage, according to a new report.

With so many handoffs — factory, freight forwarder, shuttle trucker, airline warehouse, aircraft, customs clearance — and extra security precautions, the opportunity for breakdowns is high without a team...

Hong Kong, Amsterdam airports lost cargo business in 2020

A temperature-controlled container on a lift gets loaded in side of a light blue plane.

Full-year traffic figures from several airports last week reflect an upside down year dominated by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Passenger business slowed to a trickle with airlines closing most of their networks in the face of government lockdowns and other health measures, while cargo picked up the slack in some cases.

Hong Kong, the world’s largest cargo airport, experienced a 7% decline in cargo to 4.5 million tons, and served 87% fewer passengers. The airport handled 68,660 cargo...

Cargo levels remain below 2019 at keyl European, Asian airports

Aerial view of Amsterdam Airport terminals with planes.

Three major cargo airports in Asia and Europe continue to lose volume because of the paucity of passenger flights during the coronavirus pandemic, but the situation is marginally better than in early summer.

Hong Kong International Airport, the largest cargo airport in the world, has gradually increased freight volumes since the bottom of the COVID crisis earlier this year, but September volumes slipped slightly from the prior month. The Hong Kong Airport Authority said cargo tonnage fell 4.4%...

Brussels Airport bucks trend with June rise in cargo volume

A white and red Virgin Atlantic plane takes off from Brussels Airport. The airport saw positive cargo growth in June for the first time since February.

A huge flow of all-cargo aircraft flown by independent operators combined with heightened activity from integrated logistics providers UPS and DHL, pushed Brussels Airport’s cargo volume into positive territory in June after three months of steep declines caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s a positive sign for a hub airport that normally depends on passenger traffic.

Brussels Airport Co., which operates the airport, reported Wednesday that cargo volume increased 4.8% in June, year-over-year,...
