US-to-Canada truck crossings hit pre-COVID level

Truck crossings from the U.S. to Canada reached a pre-COVID-19 level last week, suggesting that the cross-border freight recovery didn’t miss a beat during two national holidays and the implementation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on trade.

About 85,000 truck drivers entered Canada from the U.S. during the week ending Sunday, data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) released Tuesday shows. An almost identical number crossed during the comparable week in 2019.

The U.S.-Canada border crossing at Blue Water Bridge links Port Huron, Michigan and Point Edward, Ontario

Good day,

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported an uptick in truck drivers crossing to Canada from the U.S. last week. It’s another encouraging sign for cross-border freight during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just over 81,000 truckers crossed the U.S.-Canada border during the week ending May 17, the CBSA reported on May 19. It’s the highest tally since the week ending March 29. Also impressive is that this happened leading up to Monday’s Victoria Day holiday.

“It’s coming back,” Challenger President Dan Einwechter told FreightWaves. “But we have a long way to go. It’s a deep hole.”

A key measure of Canadian truckload volumes, the Outbound Tender Volume Index-Canada (OTVI.CAN) on FreightWaves’ SONAR platform, had climbed...
