Secondary trades suffer as carriers continue to chase the big bucks

The cellular fleet grew by 4.5% last year, to 24.97m teu, but capacity was cut on some routes as carriers re-deployed as much tonnage as they could on the more lucrative east-west tradelanes.
According to today’s Alphaliner data, the transpacific carriers deployed a further 1.3m teu of capacity on the Asia-North America trade last year than in 2020, a huge 31% increase in slots – albeit that about half the extra …

Four major threats almost guaranteeing another challenging year for shippers

The fractious relationship between ocean carriers and their freight forwarder and NVOCC customers is seen as one of four key disrupters to the supply chain next year, by maritime consultant Drewry.
“We are starting to see that some ocean carriers are withdrawing from NVOCC relationships and others making it difficult for NVOs to offer carrier-like fixed-contract rates to shippers under preferential ‘named account’ terms agreed in advance with ocean carriers,” it said.
Several …

Dwindling airfreight capacity forces perishables shippers to try a dip in the ocean

Things just got worse for South Africa’s perishables exporters: just as they were gearing up for the stone fruit season, struggling national carrier South African Airways (SAA) grounded its fleet.
The move was not unexpected. The airline, which has only once produced an annual profit since 1994, had filed for creditor protection in December, but the impact of Covid derailed plans for a restructure.
SAA has not operated commercial scheduled flights since …

Paying premium rates no guarantee of space for shippers to North Europe

Shippers from Asia to North Europe face a severe capacity crunch, and carriers are set to add to their misery with mid-month FAK rises and peak season surcharges.
NVOCCs have told The Loadstar in the past few days they were experiencing three-to-four-week delays for FAVs (first available vessels) to North Europe, and even longer for the UK.
“We are paying their FAK rates, and even a premium on top, but we are really struggling …

Demand spike and blank sailings make US importers scramble for capacity

Just as their inbound flows are building up, US importers are facing tight capacity on the water, chiefly out of Asia.
“We had at least two conference calls with customers and shipping lines about this in the last few days,” reported Bob Imbriani, senior vice-president international of forwarder Team Worldwide.
“It’s more difficult to get space, and you have to book earlier,” he added.
Waterborne US imports from Asia in June were 9.5% …

Obtaining airlift isn’t a problem, says U-Freight, provided shippers don’t blanch at the price

The past weekend was a lively one for Rick Keller, president & CEO of U-Freight America, after a manager reported he had undergone a Covid-19 test and the result was positive.
That resulted in a flurry of activity to deal with the situation – all staff who had been in contact with the manager were told to get in touch with their physicians, a professional cleaning company was lined up to …
