Shipments, costs decline further in April but inflection coming, Cass says

April data from payment services provider Cass Information Systems showed optimism around “seasonal improvement in May” but noted the year-over-year (y/y) comps will remain depressed going forward.

The shipments component of the Cass Freight Index was down 2.4% y/y in April and 1.3% lower on a seasonally adjusted basis than in March. The sequential decline during the month followed a 3.8% drop in March.

Freight shipments, costs sag in March

Freight shipments fell in March alongside transportation costs, according to payment services provider Cass Information Systems.

The shipments component of the Cass Freight Index declined 1% from February, 4% lower year over year (y/y). The expenditures subindex, which measures the total costs associated with shipping freight inclusive of fuel, fell 1.5% sequentially and 12% y/y.

Weakness in freight shipments to linger, Cass says

Shipment data captured by payment services provider Cass Information Systems was only off modestly in February while freight costs plummeted on a tough comp.

The Cass Freight Index registered a 0.3% year-over-year (y/y) decline in shipments while the expenditures component of the data set, which measures the total costs associated with shipping freight, fell 9.7% y/y. The costs index was up against a tough comp (up 42.2% y/y in February 2022).

Cass: January shipments better than expected; TL takes share from other modes

More freight flowed into the truckload space during January, according to a Tuesday report from Cass Information Systems.

The shipments component of the Cass Freight Index was flat with December on a seasonally adjusted basis but down 3.2% on an unadjusted comparison. The index normally sees a low- to mid-single-digit sequential decline in January. Better weather during the month and improving auto production were cited as tailwinds.
