Ship runs aground in Danube, river blocked

A Ukrainian vessel ran aground on the river Danube, on January 28, due to low water levels. As a result, shipping traffic in the river in northern Bulgaria was blocked. As of now it is not cleat when the Danube would be reopened to shipping.

According to the the Bulgarian maritime agency, after the grounding efforts were made to remove the ship, with 15 ships being held up due to the incident, near the town of Belene. There is no information on what cargoes those vessels were carrying.

Shipyard worker loses life at Fukuoka Shipbuilding, Japan

A shipyard worker died as he was working on a newbuilding vessel at the Fukuoka Shipbuilding in Japan. According to reports, the worker had been injured while cleaning the ship’s cargo tank, and later succumbed to the injuries.

Sources report that the worker fell during works in the cargo tank of the chemical tanker newbuild. He was later found unconscious and was transferred to the hospital for medical treatment. However, despite efforts, he lost his life.

Two fatal incidents involving fishing vessels off New England in a week

The US Coast Guard has dealt with two subsequent fatal incidents involving fishing vessels in the northeast coast. The first involved a sinking vessel off Maine, resulting in two deaths and the second a man overboard fatality off Nantucket.

Three missing after towing vessels collide on Mississippi

The US Coast Guard and local agencies responded to a report of two towing vessels that collided on the Mississippi River at mile marker 123, near Luling, Louisiana, on January 26. After the collision, four crew were reported missing, but one was found.

Watchstanders at US Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report that the towing vessel RC Creppel and the towing vessel Cooperative Spirit had collided and that four members of the RC Creppel are missing.

Lessons learned: Restricted visibility leads to collision

Containership hit by fire off Mozambique

The container vessel “EM-Oinousses” experienced an engine room fire while it was sailing  from Maputo to Mombasa, which the crew was able to put out, but the vessel ended up sailing uncontrollable.

Three dead as boat capsizes off Hong Kong airport

Three customs officers lost their lives as their boat capsized on January 21, in waters off Hong Kong International Airport. Two crew members survived the incident, however the cause of the accident is not yet known.

Fire started on Golden Ray wreck during welding operations

Fire broke out on the wreck of the ro-ro Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound on January 19. When the fire started contractors were contacting welding operations inside the ship.

Luckily, the fire was contained within the hull and was quickly put out by the contractor’s fireboat.
