Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo today announced that Capt. Kate McCue, the first American female cruise ship captain, will take the helm of Celebrity Beyond, the company’s third ship in its Edge Series, set for delivery from shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique in spring 2022.

The first ship to set sail from a US port since the COVID-19 pandemic had brought the maritime industry to a 15-month standstill sailed on Saturday with nearly all vaccinated guests. Celebrity Edge set sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at 6 p.m. with passengers limited to about 40% capacity.

Cruise operator of the Royal Caribbean said on Thursday that two passengers on the Celebrity Millennium ship had tested positive during the mandatory end-of-cruise testing. Royal Caribbean said the two passengers are asymptomatic and in isolation. They are under the supervision of a medical team.
