5 things to know about cargo ship that brought down Baltimore bridge

More details are beginning to emerge about the MV Dali container ship that largely destroyed Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

In 2016, the Dali hit a wall at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium, damaging a large portion of its hull. The Dali’s owner and operator have also been sued for several work-related injuries since 2018.

Last year, the Dali was also cited for propulsion issues during a stop in Chile. Here are five things to know about the cargo ship:

Port of Baltimore’s indefinite closure deals blow to city, state economy

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship has disrupted the Port of Baltimore’s container shipping services, which will impact the economy of the city and beyond, analysts said.

Six people are missing and presumed dead after the Singapore-flagged MV Dali slammed into the bridge in the early morning hours, sending debris into the Patapsco River that continues to block a large portion of the channel that leads into Baltimore’s harbor.

The state...

Baltimore bridge collapse may cost billions, dramatically disrupt supply chains

The collapse of Maryland’s Francis Scott Key Bridge Tuesday after it was struck by a cargo ship continues to block access to the Port of Baltimore and could disrupt shipping flows across the U.S.

The Singapore-flagged MV Dali container ship collided with the bridge around 1:35 a.m. on Tuesday. At least six people remain unaccounted for, CNN reports. With rescue and recovery operations ongoing, it’s unclear how long debris from the bridge will block the Patapsco River, which leads to the Port of...

Cellphone use blamed for Ever Forward grounding

A Coast Guard investigation has determined that the pilot guiding the Ever Forward out of Maryland’s Craighill Channel in March spent much of the voyage taking personal phone calls rather than focusing on getting the container ship out to sea.

The 1,095-foot-long Evergreen Marine Corp. ship was carrying 4,964 containers when it grounded on March 13 after departing from the Port of Baltimore bound for Norfolk, Virginia. The Ever Forward was not freed until April 17.

A U.S. Coast Guard Sector...

Ever Forward finally moves on

The Ever Forward was refloated in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay on Sunday, 35 days after it ran aground after sailing from the Port of Baltimore.

“Refloating the Ever Forward, which was hard aground outside of the navigation channel along the entire length of the ship’s hull, required extensive coordination of responders and involved the development and implementation of a comprehensive salvage plan, including dredging and push-and-pull tugboat operations,” the U.S. Coast Guard, which coordinated...

2nd plan to refloat container ship moving forward

The Coast Guard said there is a revised strategy to refloat the Ever Forward, and the second attempt to get the grounded container ship out of Chesapeake Bay could take more than two weeks.

“Salvage experts determined they would not be able to overcome the ground force of the Ever Forward in its current loaded condition. The new strategy offers the best chance of successfully refloating the Ever Forward,” the Coast Guard said in a press release Monday. It is working with the Maryland Department...

Ever Forward: Evergreen declares General Average

A third attempt to refloat the grounded containership Ever Forward was made yesterday. It failed and the ship remains aground in Chesapeake Bay.

Today, shipowner Evergreen Marine said that, “in light of the increasing costs arising from the continued attempts to refloat the vessel,” it had declared General Average (GA). To grossly oversimplify things, GA means that cargo owners get to take a share of the salvage cost. You can find a fuller explanation of what’s involved here.

Evergreen has plan to refloat Ever Forward

Evergreen Line has a plan to refloat the container ship aground in Chesapeake Bay.

“Donjon Smit, the salvor appointed by Evergreen, has conducted several underwater inspections of Ever Forward. The data collected has been analyzed and an effective refloating plan has been designed. This plan can be implemented after approval by the competent authority,” an Evergreen spokesman said in a Friday afternoon email to American Shipper.
