Cyclone leads to suspension of container operations at Bangladeshi ports

With cyclone “Sitrang” approaching Bangladeshi coasts, handling of containers and bulk cargoes at both the Chittagong and the Mongla seaports remained suspended from Monday (24 October) morning amid high wind and heavy rains.

Chittagong port keeps Hapag Lloyd vessel detained after crane incident

The Chittagong Port Authority has detained a 1,718 TEU container feeder vessel operated by Hapag Lloyd in the Chittagong-Colombo route after it hit and damaged a quay gantry crane.

Chittagong depot still burning, more chemical laden boxes identified

The Chittagong depot is still burning with firefighters keeping away newsmen and depot officials far from the area fearing fresh blasts as they have identified four more chemical laden boxes close to the burning containers.

“We could be sure about the presence of chemicals in four more containers,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam Himel while briefing newsmen outside the depot gate.

Chittagong makes bullet seals for inbound boxes mandatory

The Chittagong Port Authority has made mandatory the use of bullet seals in all laden import containers, effective from 1 December, to ensure goods are not damaged or lost when they land in port and sent to the off docks and factories.

The port authority said it may refuse accepting containers and refuse their unloading at port jetties unless they are locked with bullet seals.

Reefer container shortage hampers shrimp export from Bangladesh

The Chittagong Port Authority has asked the shipping agents to remove reefer containers to off docks from port yards within 48 hours the goods are un-stuffed.

The shipping agents are also asked to supply adequate reefer containers to frozen foods and shrimp exporters, as their shipment is seriously hampered due to the lack of refrigerated boxes.

Increased auctions free Chittagong box yard and increase customs authority revenue

The Chittagong Port Authority and the Chittagong Customs have intensified efforts for auctioning cargoes regularly to free space at port yards and also to free containers from being occupied for long period.
