Loaded and Rolling: J.B. Hunt’s Q2 freight bottom-cycle blues

J.B. Hunt’s Q2 freight bottom-cycle blues

(Source: J.B. Hunt, chart: FreightWaves)

Truckload and multimodal carrier J.B. Hunt told analysts on an earnings call Tuesday that it’s still too early to tell how the 2023 peak season for freight will turn out. The company noted its Q2 declines across the board in revenue, operating income and an operating ratio that fell from 90.8% in Q2 of 2022 to 91.4% this year against a backdrop of lower volumes and softening freight demand.

Loaded and Rolling: International Roadcheck is next week; shipping execs weigh in on rates

CVSA International Roadcheck is next week

(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is holding its annual International Roadcheck next Tuesday through Thursday, with a focus on anti-lock braking systems and cargo securement. This high-volume, 72-hour enforcement blitz will see some potential violators taking a vacation, often causing localized capacity surges in freight markets as fewer drivers are willing to haul freight for fear of landing a violation and...

Loaded and Rolling: C.H. Robinson CEO out; Daimler Truck CEO’s outlook

C.H. Robinson CEO steps down

(Photo: C.H. Robinson)

Bob Biesterfeld, president and CEO of C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc., stepped down Tuesday. From my corporate experience, this is the nicest way of saying one was about to be fired. FreightWaves’ Mark Solomon wrote that according to a person familiar with the matter, this departure had been planned months in advance and mostly was a matter of timing.

Part of the firing appears to be tied to performance. Solomon wrote: “The third-quarter results...

Plug Power will buy up to 75 Nikola fuel cell trucks

Electric truck manufacturer Nikola Corp. will buy 100 metric tons of hydrogen a day from Plug Power in exchange for selling Plug Power up to 75 fuel cell electric trucks over the next three years.

Nikola’s hydrogen-powered fuel cell Class 8 cabover truck goes into production next year at a greenfield plant in Coolidge, Arizona. Nikola is building a hydrogen hub in nearby Buckeye to make the hydrogen needed to fuel the trucks. The facility is going through permitting and rezoning processes....

Freightliner computer module thefts continue but the pace is slowing

Thefts of computer modules that control older Freightliner Cascadias continue. Daimler Truck North America says the pace is slowing after a rash of robberies in May.

The market-leading truckmaker told FreightWaves it has 340 theft reports from its Class 8 trucks as of the end of July.  Daimler reported a cumulative 175 thefts as of May.

“We’ve seen the number of reported incidents fall, but even one reported CPC [theft] is one too many,” a DTNA spokesman said. “This is why we’ve partnered with...

Truck Tech: Summer ACTs edition

Truck Tech logo on blue background

Playing with Lego bricks to illustrate supply chain disruptions, how the passenger vehicle market mirrors the trucking industry, and Hyliion’s Hypertruck free rides — those and other musings from the ACT Research Seminar 67 this week in Columbus, Indiana.

Explain it to me like I’m a 4-year-old

When you see some of the full-size creations from Lego bricks, you know they are not just for children. Check the recommended ages on some of the boxes if you want evidence.

Those plastic bricks helped Paul...

Used truck prices dip in July except for lower-mileage models

Overview of used trucks at auction site

Used truck prices are falling at auctions and dealerships, with one exception — newer equipment with fewer than 400,000 miles on the odometer.

After months of stratospheric prices, the air is escaping the balloon. Higher production of new trucks is prompting trade-ins that all but dried up during pandemic-related supply disruptions.

Availability of new trucks is still tight. But July sales of new Class 8 models were higher for all but one truck maker, according to Wards Intelligence. July sales...

Carlike luxuries complement new Western Star 57X ruggedness

Western Star 57X heavy haul takes a load

YPSILANTI, Mich. — If brushed metal interior accents, digital displays, and the latest safety and connected technology sounds like an ad for a luxury SUV, think bigger. A lot bigger. Like Class 8.

On Tuesday, Western Star, the off-highway-focused brand of Daimler Truck North America, revealed the third vehicle in its X-Series lineup — the on-highway 57X that oozes luxury appointments.

It replaces the 5700XE model, introduced in late 2014 and little changed over the years.

The order window opens in...

What’s not to like about lower fuel costs and reduced emissions?

Chuck Coppa and Lyle Jensen with Freightliner Coronado retrofit to run and natural gas and diesel fuel

With diesel prices at all-time highs, the American Power Group Inc. is hoping its dual-fuel approach to heavy-duty trucking results in greater interest among owner-operators and small fleets.

The $25,000 retrofit substitutes one of two diesel tanks on a Class 8 tractor with natural gas and uses software to make the two fuels work together, saving money at the pump and reducing emissions.

APG sees turbocharging natural gas in a diesel engine as an alternative for owner-operators and small fleets...
